We had the good fortune of connecting with Angelique Overton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Angelique, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
There comes a point in one’s life where you stop and think, why I am here? Where am I going? Is this all there is to life. Going to work and doing the same thing over and over. I felt I was meant for something more and I wanted to leave a legacy behind for my children. I wanted to be remembered for something when I’m gone. It all started with a thought, a what if? What if I actually tried to do this? No one is forcing me and it won’t hurt me if I fail. What if I actually did this. I filed for the license, got the business name, and EIN and kept going forward. My plan wasn’t particularly clear in the beginning, but I knew there was something out there for me and over time, it became more apparent and literally, all the pieces fell together piece by piece without much effort. It’s so amazing what you can do if you put your mind, time, and energy into something with a purpose bigger than yourself and see it come to fruition. I saw others around me succeeding and I thought, why can’t I? It was finally my time to shine and this was my way of doing something big and out of my comfort zone. I want to prove to myself that, with the proper mindset, the sky’s the limit!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Angelique Beauty was born out of the idea that we can be reborn. What sets my business apart is how this all started and the symbolism of the Phoenix. A Phoenix is a mythical bird known for rising from its ashes. I had reached a point in my life where I was extremely unhappy, unmotivated, and hopeless. I went to work day after day wondering, is this all that we are supposed to get out of life. I thought to myself. There has to be something more to life, this can’t be it. It was almost like I was going through a mid-life crisis at a young age. This unexplained hopeless feeling I had needed to be fixed. I went through bout of depression for several years trying to figure out what I was living for. The obvious was my children, but I felt there was something more for me, We all go through trials and tribulations. Then one day, a close friend of mine reached out to me and offered to help me start my own business. This friend of my has her own successful multiple businesses and is running her empire. She pursued me, but never forced or pushed me. I had joined a multi-level marketing program with a co-worker, but after a couple of months, I realized that my heart wasn’t in it. So, I contacted my friend, and started my own company. It wasn’t easy and but from the women I have met along have made this one crazy rewarding ride! Starting this business has made me look at who I really am and work on and invest in myself. It is hard mental work. Peeling back layers of limiting beliefs and pushing yourself to go beyond the surface is hard work, but it is well worth all the growing pains. According to ancient legend, the phoenix is a bird that cyclically burns to death and is reborn from its own ashes. We can all rise from the ashes, trials and tribulations as a beautiful Phoenix. I am a mother of two beautiful children, Lylianah and Oliver. They inspire me every day to be better, stronger, and wiser. In turn, I wish to inspire other women like me to rise, and become the best version of themselves possible. I’ve always struggled with self-confidence and self-esteem growing up and I want to inspire women to be intentionally themselves. The Angelique Beauty cosmetics is on a grateful mission to have closer customer relationships by empowering women’s inner beauty to understand that the the spirit of beauty is rooted in confidence, both inside and out. These elegant luxury pieces are cruelty-free, and formulated without harmful ingredients such as parabens. You can rest assured knowing that what you put on your lips is good for you and all skin types and not harmful for the planet. What I want the world to know about my brand is that there is power in being reborn. I want people to see my logo Phoenix and brand and know that it is a symbol of renewal and rebirth. I feel like I am doing a world a service when I help other ladies step out of their comfort zone and put a bold lip color and know they are unstoppable! I want to inspire ladies to chase after their dreams and not give up when it gets tough. There is power in community. Surround yourself with like-minded women and your can do anything you set your mind to!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend come to Arizona I would want to take them everywhere. There is so much to do and see, it would take more than a week! I wouldn’t even know where to begin. I would definitely start locally. I would have them stay at the Fairmount Scottsdale Princess resort in Scottsdale. That resort alone has so many accommodations and attractions on property, you wouldn’t want to go anywhere else. It is also great if you have a family as it has six different pools to choose from. I would show them around town such as the Scottsdale Quarter and Kierland. We would eat at Maple and Ash in oldtown and spend the day down there shopping and site seeing. I love the Scottsdale Civic Center park area and would stroll around that beautiful cultural scene. This area contains the Performing Arts Center, City Hall, and several restaurants. We would head up and check out Cave Creek and maybe do some horse back riding along a trail. I would spend a couple days up North in Sedona to see the stunning red rocks buttes and canyon walls and discover the vibrant arts. While up north, we could check out Jerome and Flagstaff. The one thing on my bucket list that I have not been to yet is the Grand Canyon, so we would definitely go there. Arizona has so much to offer, there would have to be return trip planned because we wouldn’t be able to see and do it all in one trip. How blessed are we to live in such a beautiful state.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be doing this interview if it wasn’t for Jessica Bargenquast of LadyChangeMakers. She is amazing and has been such a big support of mine from the beginning of our friendship at Lindsey Schwartz’s 100th episode podcast celebration. I have watched her grow both on the business entrepreneurial side, but also on the personal self-investment side as well. Watching her push pass her comfort zone and show up consistently has been extremely motivating and empowering for all of the women she supports and vice versa. I also want to shout out Lindsey Schwartz that I also met on the start of my journey. She has the sweetest, most kindest heart you could ever imagine. She has also been an integral part of my business beginnings. She started doing Powerhouse Women Girl Gang connection calls that boosted my self-confidence and drive and pushed me forward on the days I wanted to give up. Meeting the the Powerhouse Women Community has been a huge blessing and life-saver through this season of change and resiliency. These women have been my saving grace and I am grateful to have them along for my journey. I started this journey not having any direction, but I knew that I wanted to do something special and unique. Sage Aubrey. local iconic handbag designer, has also been a huge inspiration to me along this journey. I met her around the same time I started my lipwear line. To watch someone so successful be so humble and kind and treat me like an actual person with feelings, really touched me and lite my heart on fire. She made me feel like I could actually accomplish something if I put my mind to it and has stood with me along the way. She is amazing. She has been the biggest example of hard work and passion paying off. Her community of women that she has created are Iconic ride or die women that will have your back and lift you up and support you no matter what. Without any of these people, I would not be where I am today.
