We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Brass and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anthony, what is the most important factor behind your success?
You must have genuine passion and love for what you do if you want to reach your full potential. I feel the most important factor for my success has been just that. When I paint something, it will only come out truly great if I allow myself to completely lose myself in the creating process and put my full self into my work. When I am able to accomplish this, my artwork comes out very genuine and authentic. This to me is the most important aspect of what makes a piece of art great. Is it true? is it authentic? and genuine? In order to accomplish that you need love and passion for what you do.

I also feel this carries into every aspect of life. Even if you are doing work you don’t want to do, or any activity that is not innately desirable, you must find a way to put love and passion into it. The more you consciously attempt to do this, the easy and more naturally this will become and you will begin to shine in every aspect of your life.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
From the connections we share with the cosmos, to the vast networks of communication in the forest. I’m interested in all of these worlds around us. Even the ones that sneak past our own limits of perception. My name is Anthony R. Brass and I consider myself an impressionistic, surrealist painter whom focuses on expressing the love and beauty I see in the natural world. I believe what sets me apart from other artist is my ability to create landscapes of vibrant colors and striking compositions that grow beyond the frames they inhabit. I paint what calls to me and not what is trendy or what I believe the public may desire. Among many other variables, I believe staying as genuine as I can has contributed to my success. I also believe taking little steps of advancement everyday, forming good habits and trying to discover faults and short-comings of mine and improving or learning from them have been invaluable tools for me to get to where I am and where I am still going. Challenges always arrive in my life and art career, and what I’ve learned is its best to try to stay calm and look at them as opportunities. With the absence of challenges would leave an absence of growth. By coming to this realization, I have been able to lose a lot of stress and take life head on with a bit more confidence and clarity.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a dear friend of mine had planned to come visit for a week, I would take them to the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) to experience one of the largest art collections in the States. Hopefully a good band was playing in the area that week because we would most likely be checking out some live music at The Loving Touch in Ferndale or we would go bar hoping in Hamtramck trying to catch some interesting local acts. We would eat out at all the great restaurants in Ferndale and Royal Oak. If it were summer time, we would head to Belle Isle in Detroit for some swimming and beach hanging at the secret beach.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My lover Espacia Fotiu whom pushed me to leave my job and take the risk of painting full time and participating in art fairs and shows year round. The rewards have been great!
