We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Castillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Anthony, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Cutting decals is probably one of the things we do the least of. There are definitely days when it seems like we are cutting vinyl constantly, but there are way more days where we are just on the computer trying to respond to messages, get clarification before finishing designs, actually doing the design work, or even just trying to get just the right post ready for social media to try and get maximum reach with that post to potentially get more business. Then after all of that stuff, we actually make decals.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I still don’t completely see myself as a “creative” per se, but there is definitely an art to creating designs or even recreating things lots of times when people send over artwork. I’ve always been artistic and able to figure out different techniques for layering, punching and welding things to achieve the perfect look. I wouldn’t say the design side was easy but something about creating that stuff has come naturally for sure since I’m self taught and found most of the base knowledge online watching videos and the rest was all trial and error working day in and day out on different ideas and ways of merging logos and shapes etc. Even though lots of things we do now design-wise seem really quick those skills took months and years to polish and it only happened because of a desire to make sure our creations are distinguishable by the quality and attention to detail alone, and that’s always been done with clients in mind since I want them to be extremely proud of the products we’re putting out.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a self described homebody, but there are just a few go-to things that I love to do. I would bring them into the shop for a little bit since there’s a bunch of great people here just to hang out and joke with all day, but then I would take them to either a DiamondBacks or Suns game depending on who’s playing and definitely either hiking or call up some friends with side by sides and hit the desert for a day of hanging out and riding some Can Ams and RZRs. For food you can never go wrong with some birria tacos and in Arizona there’s no shortage of great spots to eat.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely my fiance Angela for pushing me to go for opportunities even when I feel like it’s a huge longshot. She pushed me to actually hit send on the email that led to working with State Forty Eight on their custom cut vinyl decals and they’ve been a huge help in answering business questions as well as being our favorite client! Along with that would be my Nana who is always telling me to stay positive and keep pushing no matter how difficult things might seem.
