We had the good fortune of connecting with April McClure-Whitehead and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi April, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Honestly the heat in Arizona. I moved here 5 years ago from down south and never gave the elements any real consideration. Being that I was an Over-the Road trucker, until maybe my 1st summer here. After that on a personal level, I just knew regular lotion wasn’t going to work for my skin. So, I started to have other people try it out people with different skin conditions (i.e. eczema, severe dry skin, psoriasis, etc.), and they all loved the feel, ease, and results. So from that Chocolate Baby LLC was born.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m most proud of my career as a over-the road truck driver. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting 47 of the lower 48 states. With a 15 year clean driving record. I got to where I am today by keeping an open mind and receiving the lesson life had to offer when they came my way. It wasn’t easy at 1st but it got easier as time went on and I continued to learn. I learned that sometimes one dream may not work out because that’s not were your supposed to be and taking a detour is sometimes necessary to get to your destination. I want the world to know that I take pride in everything I do no matter the outcome I give it my best. And that I am ultra proud that I make a product I that I not only believe in , i stand by it along with all my other customers.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We most definitely would go hiking anywhere in the valley the views are absolutely amazing. We would probably head to Sedona as well. We would do brunch at Snooze a.m. and dinner at Chef Redds Kitchen. There’s always something going on in the valley maybe catch a game, shoot some pool, or just chill poolside with drinks and catchup.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My grandmother, my wife and my bonus mom. My grandmother for showing me at a very early age it’s never to late to learn something new. My wife for the inspiration, and my bonus mom for always providing a different perspective. Also, to my tribe for being my sound board and my think tank.
