We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashley Richards and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ashley, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I started E Squared Marketing in 2018, I was at a real crossroads in my life. I had just become a mom, and while I was completely in love with my new role, I also felt this deep pull toward my professional passion — marketing. I knew I wasn’t ready to leave my young toddlers at home for a traditional 8-to-5 job, but I also knew I wasn’t done building something meaningful in my career.

It wasn’t an easy decision — there was a lot of uncertainty, a lot of what-ifs. But deep down, I believed I could do both — be present for my family and lead a thriving business. I didn’t want to choose between motherhood and meaningful work. So I took a leap of faith.

E Squared Marketing was born out of that belief — that women, especially mothers, shouldn’t have to compromise one part of themselves to fulfill another. I built this business to create the kind of balance and flexibility I craved — and now, it’s become a space to empower other working moms to do the same.

The name “E Squared” is a tribute to my two biggest inspirations: my kids, Ellie and Eli. They are the reason, the motivation, and the heart behind everything I do.

What should our readers know about your business?
E Squared Marketing is more than just a full-service marketing agency — it’s a mission-driven business built on the belief that women, especially mothers, don’t have to choose between family and fulfilling careers. What sets us apart is our heart. We’re a team of passionate, creative professionals who deeply care — about our clients, about each other, and about the work we put out into the world.

I started this business in 2017 with nothing more than a laptop, a newborn in my arms, and a vision. I knew there had to be a better way to do marketing — one that felt more personal, more flexible, and more values-driven. But I also wanted to create a space where women like me could thrive professionally and be present in their personal lives.

Getting here wasn’t easy. There were moments of doubt, financial stress, long nights, and steep learning curves. I had to figure out how to grow a business while raising a family — and at times, it felt like I was building the plane while flying it. But I kept going. I leaned on my support system, trusted my instincts, and stayed rooted in why I started. That “why” has always been my guiding light.

Today, I’m incredibly proud of the team we’ve built, the clients we serve, and the culture we’ve created — one where creativity, kindness, and results all go hand-in-hand. We’ve grown into a thriving agency that delivers high-impact marketing, all while honoring the lives and stories of the people behind the work.

What I want the world to know is this: success doesn’t have to come at the cost of balance or authenticity. You can build something meaningful on your own terms. You can lead with heart, stay grounded in your values, and still make an impact. That’s the spirit of E Squared Marketing — and I’m so proud to share it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d kick things off with a sunrise hike at Tom’s Thumb — it’s one of my favorite ways to show off the natural beauty of Arizona and get in a good sweat. Afterward, we’d reward ourselves with brunch at Little Snitch, my go-to neighborhood spot. Their coffee and creative breakfast plates never disappoint.

One night, we’d go all out with dinner at Ocean 44 in Scottsdale Fashion Square — it’s upscale, chic, and the seafood is always phenomenal. And for a truly unforgettable nightcap, we’d head to Platform 18 — a 1920s-inspired train car bar that’s as creative as it is immersive. It’s hands-down my favorite cocktail experience in town.

During the day, we’d definitely catch a Spring Training Game for some sunshine and baseball — there’s just something about the laid-back vibe and great weather that makes it a must. And I’d absolutely take them to a Yoga or Fitness class at The Park in the new PV — Afterward, we’d grab lunch at Blanco — the food is fresh, modern, and full of flavor.

Of course, I’d leave plenty of time for spontaneous exploring — local shops, spas, maybe a little desert jeep tour — and just soaking in everything that makes this place so vibrant and special.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Without a doubt, my biggest shoutout goes to my husband, Brandon. For the past 15 years, he’s been my unwavering rock — my loudest cheerleader, quiet supporter, and constant source of strength. From the moment I started dreaming about building my own business, he was right there, not just encouraging me but believing in me — sometimes even more than I believed in myself.

He’s supported the early mornings, the late nights, the travel, the long hours — all without hesitation. He picks up the slack at home, handles the behind-the-scenes things that no one sees, and never once makes me feel like I have to choose between my dream and my family. His support has been the foundation that’s allowed me to build everything else.

I’m endlessly grateful for his love, patience, and partnership. E Squared might have my name on it, but it was built on a team effort — and Brandon has been at the heart of it every step of the way.
