We had the good fortune of connecting with Daniel Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniel, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
For me, it was including my wife-partner, Dawna, in on Steam Crow. At first, she thought that it would be all about me; I knew that creating this brand would be really demanding, and I wanted to make sure that it was something that would bring us together, rather than pull us apart. It was the right thing, as she’s very creative, charismatic, and artistic herself; together, Steam Crow would be much more successful.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a weirdo who loves friendly monsters, Halloween, Dungeons & Dragons, and imaginary worlds. Once I embraced this quirky side of me – instead of trying to be what other people wanted from me – things started to come together and gel. I started to draw and create things from my own imagination, instead of regurgitating the big media brand’s characters. With the support of the Monster Rangers, I realized that I could tie emotion and story to these characters to give them meaning, and to connect with our tribe. While the creative part is a joy (which makes the work feel easier) the challenge of running the business and not being too bogged down in the worry of making a living is the tough part. Terror is probably okay, as long as it drives you to create more and doesn’t paralyze too often. Connecting with our community and hearing how the Monster Rangers and Steam Crow has made their lives a little better is the fuel to keep creating more.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We’d setting into the old wood booths at MacAlpine’s Diner & Soda Fountain for lunch. Leo’s Hawaiian BBQ takeout for a picnic. Organ Stop Pizza for a raucous dinner. The Undertow for cocktails.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ll dedicate this to our community, “The Monster Rangers.” They’re a crazy crew of folks all along the West who share their ideas, creations, and Monstro Camps with us. They’re the reason we have such a community focus, and they’ve lead us into the crazy world of adventure.
