We had the good fortune of connecting with Ashlyn Weight and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ashlyn, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I’m a graphic designer, business owner, wife, and mom – all of which keep me very busy (in the best way possible)! Finding a work/life balance has definitely come through trial and error and is something I am continuously refining and streamlining. For me, most of my daily tasks (emails, social media engagement, designing, meetings, etc.) happen during nap time, which means I really have to prioritize what I need to get done during those short windows and also forgive myself for what doesn’t. My “work schedule” looks a little different each day – but if it means I get to stay home with my baby and have my dream job, it’s totally worth it!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
At Ivy House Studio, we focus solely on creating hand-crafted, timeless brands for our clients. This includes logo design, typography styling, color palettes, and marketing collateral. While in the past we’ve only offered custom brand packages, we’re excited to release our next set of products early 2021 – semi-custom brand packages. We believe in the immense power that design can have on the world and the impact for good it has on businesses. We also understand the time, energy, and money it takes to start or run a business. That’s why we’ve created a way to find your dream brand that is also fast and affordable without sacrificing style or functionality. It’s really the best of both worlds! I started Ivy House Studio in 2020 after I gave birth to my first baby. I knew I wanted to continue working while also staying home to be with him. He really is my motivation each day. Ivy House Studio is my passion-project turned career that allows me to support my family and give my baby the best life I can. I’m grateful each day to have something that fuels me creatively and allows me to connect with my clients in a personal way!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Arizona really is such a wonderful place to live and visit! The weather is beautiful (nearly) year-round and there are so many great places to hike, hang out, and eat. One of my most favorite spots in the valley includes Harumi Sushi in Downtown Phoenix. It’s a small little sushi bar with the best Las Vegas roll I’ve ever eaten…and I’ve tried quite a few! If you’re looking for something outdoors, the Papago Park area is always fun and has a lot of hiking trails to choose from. You also can never go wrong with Old Town Scottsdale and Downtown Gilbert. Both have great food, farmers markets, and shopping. Also here’s my shameless plug for Arizona State University (go devs!) – the campus is absolutely gorgeous and is right next to Mill Ave. So many fun things to do and see within just a few mile radius!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shoutout to the many people who have helped me along my journey to becoming a business owner and brand designer. First and foremost, my parents and husband. They’ve been with me every step of the way through college + beyond. Their encouragement and support meant the most to me during my many late night design sessions. I would also like to thank my former colleagues and work friends. They know me better than a lot of people do and I’ve learned immensely from them during the time we worked together. Their knowledge and expertise continues to blow me away and I’m so lucky to know them!
