We had the good fortune of connecting with Athina Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Athina, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
Some habits that I feel helped and continue to help me succeed in life include: open to learning; taking action; reflecting; and practicing mindfulness. I love my career, family, and community. The four habits have definitely shaped where and who I am today.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m an educator. I’ve been teaching in early childhood education for the past six years. Excited to continue my teaching journey this time in elementary education. I’ve always wanted to give back to my community, this is my way of giving back. It wasn’t easy. I know some of the struggles of growing up on the Navajo Nation Reservation. My mindset overtime continues to expand. There is more to how I overcame the challenges. I sought out help from family, friends, and colleagues. I definitely learned that being true to yourself is important. Along the way, I felt pressured from how society defined a successful women as. But I’m happy that I found myself along the way. I was seeking out a reminder of why I wanted to be an educator and advocate for children and their families. Happy to say I found my motivation. While on this journey I continue to remind myself of who I am every day. Yes, I’m an educator. I’m also a Native American Women (Navajo), Reiki practitioner, and yoga/fitness enthusiast. I’m still learning how to balance it all and create my career foundation.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Well, of course, I would take them to my favorite place to dance Fit 6-7-8. Whether it’s to start off our day or start off our evening of fun. Fit 6-7-8’s instructors are amazing and make you feel comfortable about yourself. I would take them to a local event (festivals) which I find on Facebook’s events. For dinner go to Cornish Pasty (http://www.cornishpastyco.com/).
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
