We had the good fortune of connecting with Brandy Kocks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brandy, what inspires you?
I am inspired by the creative community as a whole. I love everything about artistic people and seeing their work and what they’re capable of creating, in any aspect. It is so fascinating to me how someone can take one simple thing, and totally make a masterpiece out of whatever it may be. I always love to support local artists In my community. There’s also something so special about having something that is a custom, original hand made item.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I like to say I create art but on the face, because makeup truly is an art form. What sets me apart from others is I think my “natural” approach with makeup. I believe I do makeup in a way that looks glam and beautiful, but also at the same time more so enhances my clients natural beauty in a light weight way. I am most excited about my continuing journey as a Makeup artist. With each year that has passed I learn so much and have had so many amazing milestone moments in my career. It’s exciting to have such a passion for something, and to look forward to future endeavors that are to come. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to stand up for myself, and know my worth. I am very much so someone who doesn’t like conflict, and often find myself in situations where I am quiet when I should be loud because it is easier that way. Having my own business has definitely given me that backbone, and has taught me that being confident in myself and business doesn’t necessarily mean it equals confrontation. I would like to the world to know that this is still just the beginning for me. I am so passionate about this industry. I have so many ideas and am so excited to try new avenues in the makeup world!

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
If my best friend were coming to visit me in Arizona for the week, I would definitely take them to Down Town Phoenix first. Most likely visit La Grande Orange for some pizza and lemonade ice tea, then stroll through DT phx to see all the artistic elements to it. I love to see local bands/comedians in that area as well. We would absolutely head up to Sedona for a day or two to hike, visit waterfalls, and spend the day soaking up the sun.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely owe a shoutout to the YouTube community, specifically the makeup artists. It is what initially sparked my interest in makeup, and to this day I am forever thankful for it being available to me because it laid the foundation for where I am in my career today! I spent countless hours watching YouTube makeup tutorials, doing my makeup with them and then taking it off and trying it all over again. Without YouTube and watching those influencers, I don’t know that I would have considered doing makeup as a job verses just a hobby.
