We had the good fortune of connecting with Brazilian Voices and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brazilian, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
It can be a tough road for two female immigrants from Brazil who wanted to start a company comprised of women from different backgrounds, nationalities, expectations, while dealing with numerous challenges in order to harmonize and serve their local community through music in the US… but somehow these two women entrepreneurs proved it’s possible to succeed all the same with a non-profit organization. “We wanted to bring joy, hope and educate through music” says Beatriz and Loren (Co-Founders), which was and still is their attitude behind their business after 19 years.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
It was not easy! We had to work very very hard to keep four programs running simultaneously in theaters with concerts, in schools with students, and in hospitals with patients and caregivers. It always amazes us how many people love Brazilian culture and music, and the fact that so many companies, institutions, and donors were willing to sponsor these programs with grants and funds makes us feel so supported by our community. This only amplified our responsibility, gratitude and commitment. 80% of our activities are focused in our work with patients under treatment. Now, in this crucial moment (Covid-19), the hospitals opened their “virtual doors” to keep us singing LIVE. “Thanks to 12 years of experience singing to healthcare staff and patients, we are able to continue reaching them with songs and smiles”, said Loren/Beatriz. “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” (Maya Angelou)
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
For now, we’d say “Stay home safely” or, if you are in town, enjoy the sunset at the Everglades Holiday Park.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our Shoutout would go to all our singers and our Board of Directors – Some great doctors and supporters that helped up polish our vision and mission with inspiration, contributions and encouragement!! They are amazing changemakers!! Another Shoutout would also go to all the nurses and doctors that opened their doors to Brazilian Voices’ Arts & Healing program in hospitals and nursing homes. Another passionate shoutout to Yo Yo Ma for inspiring us to serve and embrace our community through music!
