We had the good fortune of connecting with Brianne Calabria and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Brianne, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
There is a root cause behind ALL imbalances in the body! Any symptoms you’re experiencing on the outside, is your body’s way of telling you something is off internally. Many people write off symptoms as “normal” or “just a part of getting older”, when most of the time, that isn’t the case! As an Integrative Health Practitioner, it is my job to get to the root cause behind my clients’ health issues, and design a holistic plan to help them achieve optimal health again.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
As an Integrative Health Practitioner, I work 1:1 with clients to help them get to the root cause of any health issues they might be experiencing (hormone imbalances, gut issues, chronic fatigue, allergies, stubborn weight, autoimmune and chronic disease, parasitic infections, mold toxicities, candida overgrowth, SIBO, you name it!). After a review of their symptoms, I’ll order functional medicine labs which tell us exactly which systems in the body are imbalanced. Based on those results, I create a personalized wellness blueprint including a supplement regimen, nutrition and exercise plan, detoxification protocols, lifestyle recommendations as well as sleep and stress techniques. These wellness plans are customized to each individual and designed to correct any imbalances, remove any toxicities and replace any deficiencies they may have in order for them to achieve optimal wellness and health. After going to nursing school, I realized Western Medicine wasn’t the path for me. My mothers cancer diagnosis drove me to want to find a path of preventative medicine, instead of matching a drug to a symptom. I wanted to help others avoid sickness and disease before it was too late. My practice is called Ohana Wellness Company. Ohana means a group of people who all come from the same roots, a family of sorts. This is what I have built my practice to become. All of my clients are treated like family, and changing lives is my everyday goal!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in New Orleans, so finding fun and exciting things to do isn’t hard! I would start with breakfast/brunch at Willa Jean on O’Keefe Ave for a short rib, cheesy grits and egg bowl, with a frozen rosé on the side of course. Then I would walk down to Canal Street and do some shopping before jumping on the trolley ride to the French Quarter. Live jazz bands and voodoo shops are a must, maybe getting a cocktail and walking the streets for some amazing people watching. An afternoon walk-through of one of the graveyards from the 1700s with Spanish era architectural above-ground tombs holding notable figures from history is an amazing sight to see. Lunch would have to be po’boys from the Parkway Bar & Tavern which has been open for more than a century. A nice walk down to the Mississippi River would give an amazing view of the famous St. Louis Cathedral, and a walk through Jackson Square Park brings you to a bunch of local artists (and psychic mediums) set along the road. Dinner would be at Muriels, one of the oldest buildings in the city, which has a haunted past. Taking a horse drawn carriage ride to end the evening would give you an amazing history lesson about the Crescent City along with all of the haunted buildings and areas in town. Dessert would be at the famous Cafe Du Monde for live music, coffee and beignets. After wandering and exploring the famous Bourbon Street, I would end the night at the haunted pirate bar.. Lafittes Blacksmith Shop. It was built in the early 1700s and serves as the oldest structure used as a bar in the United States. Walking back home, make sure to grab some beads so you can toss them off the balcony to happy strangers before you call it a night!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a huge Shoutout to my mom, Sharon Calabria. About 15 years ago, she was diagnosed with leukemia. Luckily, she found the amazing hematology oncology program at The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Working hand in hand with her team there, she participated in multiple clinical research studies, undergoing new treatments not yet approved by the FDA. Those trials were a gamble, she was the first of many people in her situation to take many of these drugs. Some were successful in the short term, some were almost a death sentence. But she persevered and kept on fighting. Inspired by her, I took a job at UPENN in their hematology/oncology clinical trial department, which allowed me to see first hand how the medical industry operated, and how many people were suffering in silence. It was then I realized it was my calling to make a difference in the world. I wanted to be able to help people who were suffering like my mom and countless others were, and focus my efforts on helping people prevent disease in the first place. Fast forward 15 years later, and I am doing just that. Helping people recognize imbalances in their bodies before they turn into disease, and I owe it all to my mom!
