We had the good fortune of connecting with Caleb Holland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Caleb, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I personally have been drawn to art in it’s all it’s forms since I could remember. From drawing on the floor of the living room to graffiti in back lots.
I had an extremely rough child hood and became drawn to the art of tattooing. More specifically the fact that no one can take them from you. I, having lost most of my early possessions due to rehoming or evictions, was magnetically drawn to tattooing and it’s permanence.
I chose it as my only acceptable future. Refusing to accept anything less than full commitment to the pursuit of the perfect tattoo. Obsession set in deep and I read everything I could get my hands on. It was not an easy path as I started on mine at 14 years of age. As for why I chose it, I didn’t it’s what I was born for!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from other artists honestly is my dedication and passion for the craft. I got into tattooing and then art if that makes sense. The medium of needle, ink, and skin is the only medium I ever wanted to work in. I don’t truly understand any other art form except tattooing. It is a sacred holy art tied to the beginning of man kind. I am humbled before all those that came before me and the craft they perfected.
I am most proud of my growth as an artist and my abilities. I grow and learn every day even after 13 years of tattooing professionally.
I took the full commitment hard road to tattooing. I slept outside of many shops in my car trying just to get an apprenticeship.
I never let the possibility of a back up plan enter my mind. Always “tattoo or die!”
The only me I would ever be. Today I am proud to be a well versed tattooer and artist. I have developed and honed a very specific bag of tricks and skills. I remain humble and accept my limitations and take them as a personal challenge. No one is harder on me than me.
My personal brand is based on artistic freedom and creation. I never do the same design/tattoo twice ever! I like to learn my client’s personality and intentions. As well as any expectations or emotions attached to the piece. So that I can best apply my skill and style into creating a living interpretation of their inner desire.
I like to make the world more creative and attractive through my interpretation of colors shapes and forms. There is enough harsh reality on this planet. There ought to be more beauty!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Hyper lucid tattoo
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
On my journey I have encountered many but I truly thank Jarrod Miller for all he taught me and for his dedication and impact on tattooing.
