We had the good fortune of connecting with Cameron & Jeannine McChesney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Cameron & Jeannine, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
We started Greenhouse Gardens with the idea to provide fresh, local, chemical-free vegetables, herbs and fruit to the people living in our immediate community of South East Chandler, AZ. We are a small farm with its own farmer’s market and we serve our local neighbors. We believe small micro-farms like ours should be built in and supported by every city or town.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Greenhouse Gardens is unique in that there are just not enough small-scale farms providing vegetables to their immediate community in our Phoenix, AZ area. We started growing in our backyard, then eight years ago we took over a friend’s backyard and filled it with garden beds. We sold at a local farmer’s market for two years until we were ready to buy our own four acre property. Six years ago we broke ground and have worked hard ever since. We definitely believe that you need to spend about ten years doing the same job before you are a true expert. We clearly see that we have a way to go and we learn something new every day.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We always like to take new people to the top of South Mountain. The panoramic view is awesome and really shows the sprawl of the Phoenix valley. We also love to show visitors the historic downtown areas of Chandler, Gilbert and Scottsdale.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Our grandparents, Cameron’s on Long Island, NY and Jeannine’s in San Jose, CA, had amazing backyard gardens and taught us how to grow our own fresh vegetables. Farmer Jean-Martin Fortier in Quebec, Canada authored a book called “The Market Gardener” that unlocked our ability to go from backyard gardeners to small-scale farmers serving hundreds of families fresh vegetables. Without these influences, we would not be where we are today.
