We had the good fortune of connecting with Carla Magee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Carla, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor behind my success is my family. The example I set for my young daughters as a mother and business owner is very important to me. I want them to see that women have space in finance and real estate investing, and that it is important to not only embrace that we are making room, but also help other women be part of that too.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I didn’t attend college until I was 25 and I graduated when I was 30. I feel like that is important because I dropped out twice and was told that I was too old to go back or that I didn’t know what I wanted, so I was never going to graduate. It is important that we tune out the negativity and stick to our goals, regardless of age or place in life. After college, I intended on getting my MBA, but it felt like that was becoming the next bachelors degree. I wanted to stand out. So I took advantage of the education that Boeing offered and worked on my Six Sigma designation. That designation taught me more than I learned in any MBA class and being able to apply it to all real world settings is fascinating and carries over into my current business daily. Additionally, I obtained my Masters Certification in Project Management and that helps me run my business and client transactions as each project. It keeps me on track and helps me juggle multiple deadlines.

When I moved into real estate full time at 40, I was told I was too old again. It seems to be a theme and I want people reading to know that you are never to old to start something that you are passionate about!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love Arizona because it provides up with so much to do and so many places to check out with nature and city. First we would go do one of the steamboat tours on Canyon Lake. Everyone is always surprised at how beautiful our scenery is and that is one of the best ways to show it off! Even the drive out to the lake is beautiful. Then we would go for a hike at any of our amazing hiking spots through the valley and look at the views and scenery that nature provides. Afterward we would hit up Barrio Queen for an amazing margarita and tacos!
After all of that nature walking, we would go into Phoenix and do some of the best bargain hunting in the valley. At favorites like Last Chance or Sweet Salvage, or even pop over to Mesa for the monthly Brick House Vintage markets!!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I feel like everyone and everything I have come into contact with in my life has a special place to shout out through my journey. Even the people that tell you that you can’t do something play a role, because you wanted to prove them wrong. But specifically, my entrepreneurship started with cutting all my mom’s flowers and selling them. Special shout out to her for not killing me when I cut all her roses!! Then in college, I had a professor that told me I was going to be something some day. I remember him being the first person outside of my family that believed in me and saw what I was capable of. His name was David Starr at Shoreline Community College in Seattle, WA. After college, I read a little book called “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” and all the lightbulbs went off. I finally was reading in a format that felt like a blueprint for how my brain operates! After that, the rest is history and I was on my way!
