We had the good fortune of connecting with Carolyn Odisho and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Carolyn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Crafting has always been a passion of mine and when I bought my first paper craft machine, I knew it was love at first sight. I started making projects for myself, family, and friends. It wasn’t until a friend of mine pointed out that I can start doing this as a side hustle. I began selling my crafts on an online marketplace designed for artists and crafters and it gave me a way to channel stress into creating beautiful crafts. I have set a goal for myself and my business to learn something new every year and hence began the love of resin art. I have an array of products ranging from shadowboxes to resin coasters and I have a new exciting project I am working on that will soon be added to Caro’s Craft Corner.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Professionally I am an IT Product Owner for an Insurance Company here in Phoenix. Although crafting is not my primary profession; it definitely is a passion of mine. Crafting for me began with scrapbooking. I decided it was time to take my scrapbooking to a whole new level by creating my own embellishments. This is when I decided to purchase a paper craft machine, expanding my horizon of crafting starting with paper flowers and shadowboxes. Shortly thereafter I ventured further into the crafting world and discovered the art of resin.
Although mixing resin is tedious at least it makes up for skipping arm day at the gym. With resin, the possibilities are endless! Resin can be an expensive art to learn, and I have had my fair share of “oops” moments. From over pouring to over heating resin (which has happened quite a lot in the beginning); I had go back to the drawing board and learn to slow down and take my time – resin art is truly a science.
All crafting requires a tremendous amount of patience. This has been one of the biggest lessons learned throughout my experience in this business. Not just patience with the art, but with the business itself. As with anything consumer-focused, there’s a process and procedure. However, I truly enjoy what I do, and the most rewarding part is providing one-of-a-kind, custom creations that make people happy and give them memories to last a lifetime!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite spots to go to in the Phoenix area is the Different Pointe of View restaurant. Not only do you get great views but great food. Phoenix has some great views of desert landscape from the Saguaro Cactus to Camelback mountain. The possibilities are endless in this city where no one can beat our sunsets.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
All glory to God for blessing me with the ability to juggle life, career, and crafting. At the same time, I want to give a special shoutout to my parents and brother for always supporting me in all of my endeavors. Lastly, my friends are my rock, they are the pillar to my crafting success. Their endless ideas have given me the opportunity to venture out of my comfort zone and create custom items that are truly one of a kind. These items are now the best sellers on Etsy @CarosCraftCornerAZ.
