We had the good fortune of connecting with Audrey Galat and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Audrey, what matters most to you?
I work as the art curator at FOUND:RE Contemporary located in FOUND:RE Phoenix Hotel. What is most exciting about working in the art field at a venue, such as this, is seeing the art world and the general public collide. It is my favorite thing to talk about the art being featured in the hotel and to promote local artists to people who may have no art background what-so-ever. I think it is important to educate, discuss, and listen to people outside the art world and then connect them to artists who are a part of the community. In a time where it may feel as though people are separated and divided, art is something that can connect us all and bring us together. Art doesn’t have to be exclusive, and you don’t necessarily need an art education to form your own interpretation on a specific piece of art. Art allows us to understand others’ emotions while helping us navigate our own. It is an important part of growing as a community together. Because of this, FOUND:RE Contemporary only shows local artists and is open to the public 24/7. You can find me most evenings on the weekend offering art tours to those interested.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am the Arts & Culture Curator at FOUND:RE Contemporary, but I am also an artist. Currently, I use fiber arts in my personal practice to create playful, soft sculptures as a way to talk about women’s health education. As a curator, I feel blessed that I am put in a position where I can connect with other artists, be inspired, and be a part of a community. I think the most important thing I learned was forming relationships and supporting other artists helps you grow and allows your art to develop in interesting ways you never thought possible. Is it always easy? No. But having a community to support you when things get tough makes it manageable.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If you’re coming to visit me I am definitely showing you were I work at FOUND:RE Contemporary – cause it’s an exciting place! I would also take you to Papago Park for a quick hike in the area and then we would go to the Arizona Wilderness Brewery for some duck fries and good beer. There is also plenty to do in the art scene around Phoenix including Mood Room, {9} the Gallery, the Phoenix Art Museum, and SMOCA – just to name a few!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many people who have helped me along my journey, including support from my parents and encouragement from my colleagues and professors. I don’t believe I would have found myself here without them. I am also a partner of Artlink Inc. and have received much guidance in the navigation of running a gallery, especially in the beginning of my career as a curator.
