We had the good fortune of connecting with Cathleen Daly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cathleen, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I don’t know if it’s possible to always have perfect balance when it comes to work and life. I believe instead in seasons where some areas may be emphasized more than others. I believe many desire work/life balance because they find themselves burning out from doing one thing too intensely for too long while other parts of their lives end up neglected. I’ve learned this can happen in my work and life if I am not self-aware, and what has helped keep me from burning out is learning to set good work/life boundaries. In doing this, I have had to become more comfortable with saying, “No” or “No, not right now” so that I can give my full “YES!” to the projects, ideas, events, etc. that I know I want and can commit to! Overall, it has been a rewarding practice because I have been able to be much more intentional in how I give my energy to the people and opportunities around me. It is a continual learning process though!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What I am most proud of in my career thus far has been my attitude of curiosity. My zest for learning has led me to experiences in a variety of industries: film, television, modeling, government, real estate, higher education, and construction, to name a few. I believe all of these experiences have contributed to my growing skillset and deeper understanding of how to be effective in leadership, business, and brand management. None of these paths have necessarily been easy, but they have been extremely rewarding. I have been able to connect with people from all walks of life, take on bigger opportunities in my career, build my personal brand and business, and help other individuals and businesses grow in their own endeavors as well.
My personal brand and blog, Discovering Daly, has been my platform to document my lessons throughout these experiences since the beginning and has played an integral role in growing my career. My hope is that in others reading my stories that they, too, will learn how to embrace the process of discovery in their own lives, careers, and adventures. From building my own brand while growing my career, I have learned that it is crucial for all professionals to have a strong grasp of their story and how it fits into their overall goals and/or their organization’s goals. Understanding how to tell your unique story will open doors to the opportunities you want and the opportunities you didn’t know existed.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
How do I pick just one?! There are so many people who have contributed to where I am today. Whether it be my family, friends, colleagues, mentors, and more! I would love to give a shoutout specifically to all of the female leaders who have helped influence my journey. First, my mother, being the main person in my life who has encouraged me to try new things, honor my commitments, and just listen to my everyday thoughts and feelings about my work/life situations. She’s also given me some of the best business advice! Additionally, during the early stages of my career, I was very blessed to have worked under and with some amazing women in leadership who have been vulnerable in sharing their stories and struggles in building their careers and their family lives with me. I learned so much from them and have been able to apply those lessons in both my professional and personal life. They also inspired me to do the same with other young professionals just starting out.
