We had the good fortune of connecting with Chelsea Hamilton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Chelsea, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Simple Jane was started by my mother, Angella, who found a need for a CBD product, without all the stigma around cannabis. We initially started out with a line of CBD arousal oils (still our best seller!) and evolved the products into more full body wellness, muscle recovery and massage products. Ultimately we wanted a product we were in love with using ourselves! Something that smells amazing (like essential oils, not skunks!) and combines natural tools (like our Himalayan Salt Massage Stones) to give you the tools you need to feel better in your body.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve had quite a few careers! Over the last 10 years I’ve been a copywriter, a design recruiter, a wine saleslady and a digital marketing consultant. Every role I had played a piece of what makes me who I am today! The thing that all those jobs have in common is a sense of entrepreneurship that brought me to where I am today! You do not have to be a business owner to have an entrepreneur spirit. It’s embodied in your passion to create, innovate, lead and be fearless in moving your business forward, no matter who “owns” it! I will say, not a single one of those things were easy. It took a lot of getting out of my comfort zone on a daily basis. As a natural introvert, my “job” always put me out in the face of other people all day long. That was a huge challenge, and learning how to recharge and protect my time because essential to my physical and mental well-being. We all learn how to take care of ourselves better as we get older (hopefully!) and for me, it’s been a lot of learning to say no to the things that don’t bring me joy. Sometimes that’s uncomfortable especially in a social setting, but necessary! Another thing all my jobs have had in common is a vigilant dedication to customer service. Truly caring about your clients and customers is huge…and honestly, a personal touch that I think gets missed. At Simple Jane, every order we get gets a handwritten note inside. I make an effort to personally acknowledge our repeat customers. Our wholesale partners choose us over other brands because we do a TON of work to co-promote our products at their business. It’s the long game when it comes to giving a personal experience but it is the most valuable thing I bring to the table. If we work together, I care about you and will invest in you big time, that’s a promise!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have always said that Scottsdale is one of the most underrated places to come visit! To Do: Hit up the hiking trails in Cave Creek Picnic at Singh Meadows in Tempe Get a Spa treatment at the Fairmont Scottsdale and dip in the pool! Play cornhole and grab a beer in the “back yard” at the JW Marriott — shhhh don’t tell anyone I do this! To Eat: Champagne and charcuterie at Zinc Bistro in Kierland The Bounty Board & wine at Postino (any, but I love the Central location!) A dirty Chai Latte at Press Coffee in Scottsdale Quarter Bloody Mary at Blue Clover Distilleries Brunch at The Herb Box
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I grew up in Scottsdale, and lived in the Bay Area for almost 10 years before moving back to run Simple Jane. When I came back, I really felt like I didn’t know anyone and deeply missed my network of friends and colleagues. I was honestly so thrilled when I met Lindsey Schwartz who connected us to her group of Powerhouse Women! I have met not only great business collaborations but also some amazing new friends as a result of this empowered group of women. It was total proof that the culture of “you-vs-me” culture with women in business does NOT have to be a thing, and we truly rise together with collaboration over competition mentality. It’s a mentality that I live every day in my business and personal life, and I am glad to know other women who embody those same values. We’re better together!
