We had the good fortune of connecting with Colin Adrian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Colin, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is that I love what I am doing. Every day when I enter my studio I am excited to begin my day. Time does not exist when I am working. I take a small break for lunch which can be comparable to waking up from a deep sleep. I put my head down and go. By the end of the day I am always left with a huge feeling of accomplishment and pride in what I am doing. It can be exhausting but the rewards of creating beautiful pieces overshadow any shortfalls. Being happy in my environment is a huge factor contributing to productivity. Coming from NYC and Portland Oregon, the beauty of the desert scape here in Arizona is both calming and inspiring. I look forward to what new ideas this will bring.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started with Stained Glass 10 years ago in a small room in my apartment in Brooklyn NY. Not really knowing anything about the craft and having a background in drawing and design I started simple with a series of 7 feathers. Original designs that sort of came to me very quickly. Once I perfected the design I decided to take them around to a few of nice boutique stores in the city. I figured I had nothing to lose and was curious if others felt that these were as special as I did. They did! Within a few months I was working with some lovely people and they were selling! Things sort of took off from there. The next thing I knew people were contacting me for custom projects in their homes. Some celebrity clients soon came after. It was all very exciting,
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Since we are still very new to Arizona, we are still exploring as much as we can! We have a small son so when he’s not busy with school activities we seem to always be moving around. We love the outdoors. Arizona seems to be a never ending place for exploration. We have completely fallen in love with the mountains. We love hiking around the superstition mountains, and Tonto national forrest. A huge plus to where we live is that Sedona is only 2 hours away. We try to visit as often as possible even if it’s just for the day. We recently hiked up to the top of Wave Cave and it was absolutely breathtaking.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to Dedicate this shoutout to my wife, Eiko. Years ago when we first met, I was working in the world of set design in NYC. Exciting and creative environment for sure but I was not feeling totally fulfilled. She had worked with glass and jewelery herself and had materials and tools laying around. I kept talking about ideas I had for glass pieces. She finally pushed me to try it out. Love at first site. Once I began creating I haven’t stopped. That was ten years ago. She has always supported me 100% and that encouragement has been invaluable.
