We had the good fortune of connecting with Conrad Clark and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Conrad, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
My success is built from my belief in my preparation and practice and of course a little bit of luck. Believing in myself and maintaining a relentless mindset. Understanding that the people who are “best in the world” are almost always considered crazy or “not from here” because of their work ethic, dedication and their belief that everything they want to happen will happen.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I recently began my first coaching role with a varsity girls’ basketball team, marking the culmination of an incredible journey. My career began with a true 1-in-a-million opportunity. After playing in the Scottsdale men’s rec basketball league, I received an unexpected email inviting me to try out as a practice player for the Phoenix Mercury. I figured, why not give it a shot? To my surprise, I made the team. From that moment on, I committed myself to being available 24/7, doing whatever I could to contribute to the Mercury’s success. Volunteering as a practice player for two years, I not only deepened my understanding of the game but also learned what it truly means to work in professional basketball.

What I’m most proud of are the relationships I’ve built with athletes, coaches, and trainers. I was also fortunate enough to be a part of the Olympic USA Women’s basketball practice team, an experience that expanded my perspective even further. What excites me most now is the opportunity to pass on the knowledge I’ve gained to the next generation of players, especially young women.

It hasn’t always been easy, and one of the biggest challenges was not having a formal coaching background. However, I overcame that by showing up every day, asking questions, and learning from some of the brightest minds in the sport.

The lessons I’ve learned are simple yet profound: availability is the best ability, stay humble, and have no expectations. My story is one of persistence, passion, and an unwavering love for basketball. My ultimate goal is to inspire athletes and help them unlock their full potential, both on and off the court.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m proud to call Tempe home, and I love showing visitors everything this area has to offer. For food, Taco Chelo is always a favorite – whether you visit their spot in Phoenix or their location near ASU, you can’t go wrong. When it comes to nightlife, Walter Studios is a great place to grab drinks and meet new people, and if you’re looking for something more low-key, Fate has some of the best pizza around, while Boondocks is perfect for catching a game or enjoying a fun game night with friends.

For entertainment, Tempe has some great options, like the shows at Mullett Arena or the stand-up comedy at the Tempe Improv, which always guarantees a good time. When it’s time to get outdoors and unwind, I love heading to South Mountain for a hike or floating down the Salt River to escape the hustle of the city. And of course, if you’re a golfer, there are plenty of amazing courses throughout the valley to enjoy. Whether you’re into exploring the city’s vibrant food and nightlife scene or just relaxing outdoors, Tempe and the surrounding area offer something for everyone.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Coach Samuel Dentz from McClintock High School had a significant impact on me, shaping my motivation. His approach challenged me in ways I didn’t expect, and although it was tough, it drove me to become the coach I am today. I carry that lesson with me to ensure I make a positive difference in the lives of the athletes I work with.
