Meet Cortney Jones | Real Estate Investor | Certified Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Cortney Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cortney, what role has risk played in your life or career?
My personal belief is that risk is present in everything we do and anywhere we are, even in the simplest things. Looking at it that way helps me to put it into perspective as a smaller thing to be mitigated and dealt with rather than this huge, overwhelming fear that stops me in my tracks. I also trust myself and my resourcefulness and know that there isn’t much I can’t get through. If I don’t know how to do it then I likely know someone who does or I can find the information out or learn what needs to be done so when I look at anything I use that as a barometer to whether or not the risk is worth the reward.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
When I think about where I am today as a coach to Realtors and real estate investors I think that what sets me apart is 2 things: I always tell it like it is and I’ve done it. Having been a broker/owner of my own real estate firm and owning a large portfolio of rentals along with hundreds of rehabs and sub2 deals under my belt, there isn’t much I haven’t seen. Therefore, I can share my experiences first hand to help people achieve the same success.
What I’m most proud of is the daughter we’ve raised and the family values, traditions and strength that my husband and I model every day. In my business life, I’m most proud of the fact that as I coach and train others I get to be a part of their success and watch them enjoy the same time and money freedoms that I’m so incredibly grateful for. It’s like having children all over and the pride you feel when they accomplish something they have set out to do. I not only get to experience that with my own daughter but with those I help all over. It’s a huge blessing!
No, it was definitely not easy. My brother is a Navy Seal and they have a saying, “the only easy day was yesterday” and I think anyone in real estate could adopt that as their own motto. Every day is a challenge and every situation presents new challenges to be overcome. I take it one step at a time, breakdown the problem to the logical issues, remove emotion, look at what I do or do not have control over and then take care of the issues I can. In real estate each challenge is different so there isn’t a one size fits all what to overcome the challenges, but being resourceful, having clear goals and never giving up helps.
Throughout my 33 year real estate journey I’ve learned so many valuable lessons. One that sticks with me every day is that you never really know what another person is going through unless you ask them. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, not make assumptions and believe that most people come from good intentions, until and if they prove otherwise. As a real estate investor I work with people in a lot of bad situations and it’s easy to make judgements and assume negative intentions, but in general I believe that most people are doing the best they can with the skills and knowledge they have and we have an obligation to help when we can and guide them out of challenges.
I want people who have a passion and desire to be successful in real estate to know that you absolutely can do it. Yes, you can buy real estate without money and credit, but it is hard work, despite what the gurus will tell you. They tell you that because inherently people don’t want to buy a job, but being a successful real estate investor is a job. It’s a fun job if you like challenges and it pays better than any other job I know, but it’s not easy. It is simple, but it takes a lot of action. In my Fast Track to Cash Wholesaling course I give people the exact numbers of contacts you have to make in order to get a deal and it’s well over 400. Most people give up after 3-4. But if you’re willing to do the work for a few years you can live a life that most will only dream of and it’s totally worth it!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I currently reside in 2 areas – Phoenix and Detroit so it depends on the time of the year. In Detroit we live in a downtown high rise with restaurants and walking distance to sporting events and lakes. We would start out by walking over to and having dinner and drinks on the patio at Lumen then we would walk over and catch a game (baseball, football or basketball, depending on the time of the year). After the game we would head over to Gilly’s Clubhouse for a couple drinks. Over the next few days we would definitely pack a cooler full of drinks and a picnic basket and take the boat out onto Lake St. Clair; grab a nice dinner and do a ghost story tour at The Whitney; take a stroll through the art museaum at Park West; catch a Broadway show at Fox Theatre with dinner before at La Laterna; catch another game; and enjoy each other’s company and watch the sunset on the 72nd floor at Highlands with a nice dinner and wine pairing.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost I want to shoutout my mom who taught me and gave me the confidence that I can do anything I want. I think that resourceful, confident mindset has served me well and allowed me to move forward even when I’m fearful. Thank you to Carlton Sheets for his late night infomercials way back when that got me intrigued and exposed me to the basic foundation of buying real estate with no money down. Having spent well over $75,000 on my education along the way, I learned new techniques and aspects of the business from some greats: George Antone, T. Harv Eker, Blair Singer, Jay Abraham, Richard Roop, Kris Kirchner, William Tingle, Russell Brunson, and Russ Whitney and my friends in Peer Group 3 of the best mastermind group I was ever a part of.
