We had the good fortune of connecting with Courtney Larsen and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Courtney, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I’ve always had a strong love of art and creating! Even as a child, I’d spend hours working on a project just because I enjoyed it so much. I knew going into college that my end goal was to be able to do something creative for my job. I loved art, but I also loved just making things in general. Throughout my early 20’s, it became very clear that creating was not just a fun hobby, it was an integral part of my personality and soul. I knew I would never be fully satisfied with a non-creative work life, and I felt it was important to listen to that feeling! I needed a job that would allow me to create every day, and to share these creations with other people.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I try to make each wedding invitation suite I make special and meaningful for my wedding clients. I believe each love story is unique, and deserves to be given the same care and intention as a fine art painting, and that the invitations I create for them should be keepsakes they can proudly display in their homes and enjoy for years to come. What sets my business apart from many other wedding stationers is that I have a fine art background, and believe wedding invitations are little mini pieces of artwork and should tell a story. I love that clients choose me because they want their love story captured in this unique way, and understand the value of personalized artwork. My business has evolved a lot in the 6 years I’ve been working, and I owe a lot of my growth to an amazingly supportive community who continue to refer their friends and family to me. The hardest part so far has been niching down and letting go of project types I no longer find fulfilling in order to make more room for projects I’m really passionate about. In narrowing my business offerings, I’ve found I’m able to give even more love and care to each project I do take on, and I know that will only continue to allow me to grow as an artist and creator. I want the world to know that Spindles Design Co. is founded on a love of art and creating, and the belief that beautiful imagery is important for our souls.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take them to eat at Welcome Diner and Gallo Blanco in Downtown, shopping at PHX General, and a walk down Roosevelt row to check out all the shops, restaurants, and cool artwork!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’ve been blessed with an amazing, supportive community, and people that have given me great opportunities. One in particular is my friend Amelia Walsh, who pushed me to pursue creating wedding stationery and signage! She really believed in my work, and opened my eyes to the possibilities in the wedding industry, and how I could bring my own artistic vision to that space. She is quite literally responsible for booking my first few wedding clients, and I owe a lot to her believing in me and pushing me to go for it!
