We had the good fortune of connecting with Damian Gomes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Damian, can you tell us about an impactful book you’ve read and why you liked it or what impact it had on you?
The book is “ Jonathan Livingston seagull “ By Richard Bach. It’s a quick read but one of my favorites. Basically ,it’s about a bird who doesn’t want to do what the other birds do.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am mostly a painter and sculptor but really I just enjoy making things. That’s what we’re supposed to do. My aim in art is to make something the viewer can feel. That kind of art that stops you from thinking. Picasso , Rothko , sir Howard Hodgkin , these are painters that really make you look. That’s what I’m after.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well , if I were in phx , and there wasn’t a global pandemic taking all the fun away, I think We’d hit Lux for a cocktail and some dinner. I love some mountain trails when the weather is good. Hana sushi is great , too. Museums , first Fridays , the usual downtown stuff.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shout out goes to pie. You give me piece. And also , to the artists with no regard for convention. True originals. The artists who’s lives are works of art , too. Warhol is one
