We had the good fortune of connecting with Dan Spencer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dan, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I have taken many big risks personally and professionally. I could have chosen an easier path then becoming a Marine or a police officer but why not go all in for what I considered the top tier career choices. The coffee business and podcast we run were huge unknown risks and something that was completely our of my element but it was so worth it. Risk taking is a MUST in business but only with a clear vision of the goals and future. The negatives of risk taking can be loss of time and or money but rewards can be substantial. I have learned that patience and constant attention to our mission and operations has been huge for us in the business. I am not done taking more risks either. Status Quo is not my style or speed.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Filthy Pirate Coffee is family operated coffee and tea business. We have been in business since 2018 when it started as a hobby to offer low acid smooth coffee to friends and family. The company was born out of necessity for me due to acidity and acid reflux issues when drinking coffee. We are a very pro first responder, military and second amendment company. We provide charity coffee in support of law enforcement and also do a podcast for police mental health. Our pirate branding is top notch and one of a kind to go along with our unique coffee.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would hit local breweries every night to try different beers. Each day we would have lunch at local iconic food places such as El Charro, El Guerro Canelo and places downtown. And probably would do some hiking as their are many places throughout Tucson area worth the effort to hike. I would include trips to Bisbee, Sonoita and Tombstone in the week as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
