We had the good fortune of connecting with Dave Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dave, how does your business help the community or world?
Valley Leadership focuses on building strong leaders to work together to get more done for Arizona. We start by giving people the tools they need to make an impact in the community. Then, we put them to work in our Impact Maker – a network of Valley Leadership alumni along with community organizations and champions who are committed to tackling the greatest challenges we face, like education and health, and ultimately creating long-term, systemic change. The Impact Maker is new, but already making progress on a number fronts across the Valley.
What should our readers know about your business?
In the past two years, we’ve really created traction by strategically putting leaders together with organizations already making a difference in the community. This new model of preparing leaders to use their leadership for action, has led, and will continue to lead to more successful outcomes for the community. Everything our leaders do is steeped in the “how” of leadership: what we call our Principles of Doing, and they’re just that – the values we want to encourage to get more done for Arizona: Being driven to “do” – to take action; putting Arizona first; building trust; having a team mindset; and acting with integrity. Those values guide our work and how we work to greater community impact.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Having been born and raised here, it’s always amazing to show people (especially people who have never been here before) the desert. It blows them away. They’re used to trees everywhere, grass, clouds, and humidity (most likely). Not here! So, we’d go to Desert Botanical Gardens to see what makes desert plant life just as interesting and beautiful as any rose garden. If they’re younger than me (and in much better shape than me) we’d hike Camelback Mountain where they can get a great view and a great exercise (especially when they have to carry me down the mountain). We’d finish the day at Four Peaks: yes, they have great beer, but they also have the best turkey sandwich anywhere – it’s the beer bread! Then back to the house to enjoy what Arizona does best: air-conditioning!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Our leaders of course! The Impact Maker volunteer-leaders have put in hundreds of hours the past year and a half to improve the quality of life of individuals and families across the state. They realize that change does not happen overnight and that lasting impact takes time, committed persistence and hard work. There is so much possibility for Arizona to lead the way in solving many different issues. Our leaders and strategic partners working in the field are doing just that.
