We had the good fortune of connecting with Dawn Patton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dawn, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
We spend day in and day out reminding people that running the numbers in your business isn’t just something you do around Tax Day. It’s something that you should constantly be doing. Your numbers tell your story, help you set prices, let you know when it’s time to hire, dictate when to invest, and so much more. Knowing your financial situation helps you OWN your business not just be a business owner.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
To know why we do what we do, you need to know a little bit about corporate tax firms. From January to May expect 60 hour work weeks. Goodbye family and social life. Hello, staring at screens all day. So yeah, accountants in this position usually don’t care to explain your finances to you. They just want you to sign their papers and move onto the next stack of to-dos. Well, I didn’t want this. I didn’t want to work like this and I didn’t want to treat people like this. So I decided to quit my corporate work and sign on a *few* clients. Well, it turns out customers were also seeking a different kind of firm. They didn’t want to be ignored anymore. They were seeking ownership in their business. And no, we don’t just mean their name on the LLC. We mean they wanted to be invested in their numbers, their taxes, their projections, etc. So Patton Accounting and Tax not only was born but it grew REAL FAST. Because it was a breath of fresh air for small business owners. Now, we’re an all female team, empowering small business owners to take charge of their numbers and ownership of their businesses.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I mean you may not know this based on our occupation but we’re kinda big art nerds. So for that reason, we definitely love First Fridays. The art scene is immaculate and has been for years. And cuz most of us are moms here, we’re more than partial to the train park. In fact, would you believe that one of our employees flew in and out in one day just to visit it??

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Ah, there are so many people that have helped contribute to our success today. But at the end of the day, all the credit goes to our wonderful clients. Their passion for their small businesses is contagious and fuels our fire. We do what we do for them and we sure love doing it.
