We had the good fortune of connecting with Deidra Peaches and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deidra, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am inspired to create and convey stories that resonate with my identity as a Dine’ Woman. Growing up, there was hardly any representation of Native people in mainstream media. Today as a Filmmaker, I continue to make content centered around Native issues. Whether that being documentaries, narratives, or music videos, I tend to create content that emphasizes the Dine’ epistemology.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is emphasized through visuals and sound. What sets me apart from others is my connection and respect towards the art of filmmaking. To be a successful filmmaker you have to be able to tell a story. I have been fortunate to experience other Indigenous cultures besides my own and witness comradery within many Native communities. How I got to where I am today took years of perseverance. As a filmmaker, it’s incredibly difficult to acquire consistency in income. Additional challenges I have faced include lack of equipment and resources, What I have learned throughout the years is how to be resourceful and to listen to the story. What I want the world to know about me is that it’s possible to be self-taught and to continue your passions although it may seem impossible.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If they were in Flagstaff I would suggest Bookmans.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give recognition to Colin Haviland and Cecil Tso. They are members of the group COCEC based out of Flagstaff, AZ. I love all the work Cecil has created through his musical endeavors.
