We had the good fortune of connecting with Deion Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Deion, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I would say the most important factor for the success of my career would be authenticity. Being authentic in my upbringing, style, wants, and needs. Learning how to truly love my passion for what it does for my soul and my mental.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am Hip Hop dancer and choreographer based in San Diego, CA. I am currently one of the few black leads that San Diego has to offer and I own San Diego’s first/largest Black & Brown based competitive adult hip hop team. I am proud of the representation that we are able to exude visually. The SoCal competitive team setting is actually predominantly Filipino, so there was not a lot of representation for myself growing up in the area I was from. My dance company ‘Young Hustle’ is such a force of Black cultural influences and style. It was not easy growing up in the world of dance out here San Diego, being that there was a lot of racism and micro aggressions. People wanted to emulate my culture and borrow from it, but didn’t want the actual visibility of my roots. I’ve learned to embrace my skin tone, my style, my musicality and craft so that it wasn’t something that could just be done by anyone. During my journey I’ve learned to react less. a fight is only a fight if both parties are engaged. By removing myself from things that don’t serve me, I was able to actually focus on what I really wanted with my dreams. What I want the world to know is that you will never see the change for the sacrifices you are not willing to take. No one said trying to write wrongs was easy, only you will know how bad you actually want it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would most definitely take them out to eat lol. I would say Cafe 222 for breakfast in downtown SD. Lunch in Old Town near Little Italy! Love Mexican cuisine and culture. Next would be either be strolling through downtown in seaport/Gaslamp or roller skating in Linda Vista. Then end the night with Gaslamp pizza downtown. Some of the best places I like to go are probably the San Ysidro outlets to shop or mission beach to get the full SD experience.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank God first and foremost. Second I would like to thank my mother Angela Williams for the love and support she ahs giving me through this time. I would also like to thank my second mom / role model Rosy Vasquez for being a huge inspiration for what it means to be an extraordinary human being. My career would not be where it was without having these strong woman in my life.
