We had the good fortune of connecting with Derek Sherrell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Derek, why did you pursue a creative career?
Growing up as the child of a starving artist, the only relationship I had with the idea was to run away from it. I knew first hand, the struggles that came with chasing a career in art… Or so I thought!

After several real jobs, It was clear that I was not a W-2 worker. I wanted more from my life and life wanted more from me. I wanted to create. I wanted to build! Oh Snap! I am an artist. Please don’t tell me mom.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is planning, designing and building, small infill housing units known as ADU’s (Accessory Dwelling Units)

What sets my art apart from most art is that it is a necessity. My art is housing, everyone deserves a home. We all need the security that shelter brings to feel safe. Our home is the foundation of all things creative. I want to help solve our countries housing and affordability crisis with the ADU strategy.

The huge walls in local zoning codes, think single-family zoning, are slowly being torn down. Supportive ADU legislation is sweeping the country and my mission is to tell anyone who will listen to consider an ADU. Imagine hosting an art class, only the final product is needed a house. Who all can say they live in a mixed media culture?

I want to convince every person in the world that an ADU is within their reach and they are the key to first-time homeownership.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My story, my passion and my success are were fueled by love, luck and being poor. Who would know that growing up well below the poverty line would be the ultimate fuel for my creative engine. Being poor gave me so many more opportunities in life. Teachers, coaches and mentors could see that my life was a struggle and therefore would give more of their time. Two that stand are my mom for teaching me the value of being poor. My high school wood shop teacher for believing in me and my little league baseball coach that was very wealthy and drove a 25 year old beat-up Datsun.
