We had the good fortune of connecting with Devin & Mason and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Devin & Mason, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
One evening while we were inside, watching football with our friends. We were discussing how it would be cool to do the play-by-play for the near by college volleyball team. However, this wouldn’t amount to much and we decided to start a podcast instead.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Hicks From The Stickz Podcast mission is to promote rural lifestyle through learning and storytelling. We interview an array of individuals from farmers, ranchers, rodeo athletes, western influencers and anybody in between. However unlike most podcasts in this sector, we do it in a relaxed environment which promotes lots of storytelling and interesting conversation. Also, we hope individuals learn something new from out content but with some laughs along the way.

The journey of our podcast has involved a lot of learning for both of us, especially regarding the technology and marketing. We had to take most of the year to figure out how to run a podcast and create a marketing plan. After almost being a year old, we have grown quite a bit locally and have reached out to many people. Next year, we hope to grow it further, monetize it and create more opportunities for ourselves.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
With Mason living in Olds and Devin planning on moving back in the winter, this has become the home for the podcast. It is a small town in central Alberta with not a whole lot to do. So, we often leave the town and head out into the countryside to have fun. We tend to find ourselves at our buddies ranch in Bergen, Alberta and usually get up to some mischief. Often, we spend the days either riding horses, roping the dummy or having a beer (maybe two…)

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
When we started the podcast, John Muller aka Mason’s father, helped us get a lot of our initial interviews and contacts. Throughout this process, he has gotten us many interviews including Theo Beyer, Quinton Wiess, Carter Landman and more. He continues to connect us with interviewees and give us ideas for future episodes.
