We had the good fortune of connecting with Geneviéve Mar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Geneviéve, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Making visual art feels very second nature to me. When I was a young kid, I’d always draw all over my classwork before handing it in– there were also a few instances where I got in a lot of trouble for trying to cut out patterns in my parents’ window treatments and bed skirts. I’d leave chalkboard sketches around my high school in peoples’ classrooms, and when I started working my first job I’d absentmindedly doodle in my notebooks when I probably should have been doing homework. I feel like no matter what I’m doing, a little bit of my mental RAM is usually just observing things and trying to figure out how to stylize them, so it felt natural to try to honor that.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve dealt with a lot of the common issues that people pursuing art tend to have. Sometimes people don’t consider illustration to be a real job. Growing a clientele can be really hard. Imposter syndrome also is ever present for me, but I try to combat those kind of things by making sure I have time to practice, and making an effort to let each new piece teach me something new, even if the lesson is “this part looks awful, maybe don’t do this one thing again”, haha.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love hiking in Superstition, and I think the local lakes are beautiful and a huge relief in the summer months. I’ve also missed going to Valley Bar a lot during this pandemic. If you haven’t eaten at Barrio Cafe, that’s also an absolute must.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Lydia Chase is so amazing in so many ways– she’s an accomplished painter, can make any style look great, and regularly inspires me to keep practicing and building my skills. She’s also really sweet and fun. 10/10.
