We had the good fortune of connecting with Heather Bamberg and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Heather, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have always been a maker. Creating something of beauty gives me a great sense of accomplishment! I have dabbled in many art mediums; I especially loved large format photography and ceramics, but I absolutely fell in love with working with metal. I love the permanence of it! It’s amazing to make an heirloom that may be passed down, or perhaps even get dug up by some future archeologist. I feel very lucky that my passion is also my career.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I know there are jewelers out there who may not consider themselves an artist: or others who would qualify jewelry as ‘fine craft’, but I am 100% an artist. I think this belief helps to differentiate my work. I approach every item I am making as wearable art. Beauty and function are very important, but making with love and style are equally integral.
I hope that people who wear my jewelry can feel the happiness I have while making it! Each piece is infused with my love for my work, and I honestly believe that has attributed to my success.
I am so proud that I can display my work and that there are people who appreciate it. Each year my skill as a Metalsmith grows, my style evolves, and my business is moving forward in leaps and bounds. None of that would be possible without the wonderful customers who support me and wear my art.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love to explore nature and I feel like Arizona has so many options! Heading up to Oak Creek Canyon and Flagstaff would definitely be on my list. Dinner at Zinc and beers at Taphouse Kitchen would also be on my list. The Scottsdale Culinary festival is also amazing! Of course if there are any art fairs going on I’d be there too! Some favorites are PHX Flea and Fountain Hills Festival of Fine Art and Crafts.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Honestly my metalsmithing journey was on a long pause and would never have been able to move forward without the support and encouragement of my husband. He built my studio and continues to improve it for me! He is the person who helps me believe I deserve the success when I am in doubt. He also encourages me to take a day off when I am exhausted. I am so thankful for him!
