We had the good fortune of connecting with Izzie Barcenas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Izzie, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I think taking risks is the key to growth. Staying in your comfort zone is your enemy, especially in business. Taking risks can be scary, because of the unknown. I know! However, taking risks has been the best adventure for my life and career. I’ve seen more success in my business and personal life when I put all my fears aside and just go for it! I always tell myself and others that it’s okay to be afraid, but if you want to grow in life, business, love or anything else, you MUST learn to put your fears aside. Otherwise, you will always be half in, half out and that is what holds one back.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am a licensed aesthetician and owner of The Skin Alchemist LLC, located in Gilbert, AZ. I offer skincare services, waxing and brow lamination. It’s so hard to pick one thing that sets me apart from others because I feel like at the end of the day, we all have a different personality and way of doing things. However, I do pride myself in my attention to detail and providing a safe space for all my clients.
I’ve been in business, going on 2 years now. I graduated in 2019 and opened my first studio with another esthetician in November of 2019. Shortly after, COVID happened and we were shut down. I never realized how not being able to work or be around people could affect ones mental health so much until it happened to me. On top of that, I was going through some heartbreak and I became unmotivated, uninterested and I was having a difficult time focusing. I don’t think I’ve fully shared that with anyone. Anyway, I decided to take a few months off to focus on my mental health and do some healing. It was some of the best and most difficult months of my life.
Fast forward to today, I am now at a new location and was able to rent a studio on my own at The Collab at San Tan Village Mall . Was it easy? absolutely not. I’ve had to overcome a lot of things in my personal life because it was reflecting on my business. I’ve learned that the most important thing in your life and career, is yourself. The moment you start neglecting yourself, your happiness and your mental health, it will eventually catch up and reflect on you and your career.
I love my journey as an esthetician and business owner so far, because it has helped me in the way that I take care of my clients. If there is anything I would want my clients, or anyone who knows about my business and me, is that my space is a safe space for everyone. I’m not only passionate about giving you the best facial experience but I’m also passionate about mental health awareness.
Life can be difficult at times but you have to keep going, NEVER give up on your dreams and remember that where there is a will, there is a way!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the area for a week, our itinerary would be packed with hiking, food and coffee shops. For hiking, you can never go wrong with ANY hike at Superstition Mountain. My ultimate favorite hike there, is Flat Iron. It’s DEFINITELY a whole day thing because depending on your hiking experience, it can take you more than 4 hours to go up and down. For food, I would take my best friend to my favorite Vegan spots around the valley. That includes Tacos Veganos in Phx, Earth Plant Based, Verdura and Loving Hut! I’m such a foodie and just loooove food, but I mean, who doesn’t! I would also like to note that all of these are Vegan food spots that I have taken several non vegan friends to and they have loved all of them. For breakfast, I would take them to The Nile Coffee shop in Downtown Mesa! The coffee ship is so cute and they also have the BEST vegan breakfast sandwhiches and lunch!
Arizona is beautiful and there’s so much to do. I feel like we sometimes take that for granted or kind of forget that. Some of my favorite and fun things to do are drives to Sedona (you literally can’t go wrong with anything you do in Sedona), walks or rollerblading at Tempe Town Lake, paddle-boarding at the lake, coffee dates and bookstore dates with a significant other or friends is always fun for me.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to give my mom and my aunt, a special shoutout because they have ALWAYS been my biggest supporters. I literally don’t know what I would do without their love and support. Also, shoutout to ALL my clients because I would not be in business without them!
