We had the good fortune of connecting with Diane Darnell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diane, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I found through many years of moving furniture for people that there was a specific group of people who were in need of this type of service. Tailoring to people needs.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I have been involved in the regular kinds of moving and storage almost my whole life. I started driving a semi tractor trailer and moving people all across the country since I was 27 years old. I learned from the ground up, starting with just packing and loading trucks. Over the years, as I met people and I noticed a need for elderly people, either they were moving into a care facility or had passed away. The children of these seniors did not know how to organize and pack up there items. Usually part of these items they would want to keep, but the other items they wanted to donate. What I like to do is to separate, sometimes working right next to the customer. I try to donate items to a place of their choosing. Sometimes a women’s shelter with kitchen and clothing items. If someone needs a bike to get to work we find a shelter who know of a needy person for that. Sometimes the items are destroyed so we would take those items to be recycled as best as we can. Trying to limit what goes to the city dump is the ideal plan. I once found a home for a baby grand piano that was on its way to the dump, I called every music school in our area and found a new home and delivered it within 3 days of the phone call. It makes me feel good to have helped someone in need.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For breakfast i would take them to 24th street and Camelback to the Breakfast Club. Next I would suggest going to the Butterfly Wonderland and the Aquarium in Scottsdale. Another great place to spend some time is at the MIM the Music Museum. They have Children’s classes there and you could go back 5 days in a row just to enjoy all the different concerts there as well as leaning about all of the cultures that shaped music. Another great place would be the Heard Museum, especially if you can catch one of their Hoop Dance days. Pita Jungle for lunch or dinner. Old Scottsdale is great for evening drinks or just dinner. The top of the Marriott has a beautiful view of the city while you eat as it spins around. La Fogata at McCormick Pkwy has beautiful food as well.
