We had the good fortune of connecting with Dixi Patel and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dixi, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Being consistent and truly mastering the art of time management is how I was able to pursue both my careers as a singer and a doctor. People are always appalled and ask me how I balance both. I was so passionate and determined to not give up one for the other, plus music was my stress release/getaway from the doctor life, so I just made it work.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me apart from others is literally the term I coined for myself on tiktok as, “The Singin Doc.” The name speaks for itself and It’s not something you see often as the two careers are quite on opposite spectrums from each other. Honestly when I set foot on this journey of becoming a singer while also becoming a pediatrician, I didn’t know that I would achieve as much success as I did as a singer because it initially was only a hobby. But the more I put myself out there, the more opportunities were naturally just coming my way, and I took every single one of them. And now here I am 15 spotify tracks later with more than 100K listeners/fans from all over the world. Was it easy to get here? No. The balance was tough. I always felt like I couldn’t put in as much time into music as I would’ve liked, and part of me always felt like I wasn’t tapping into my full potential due to pursuing another career with it. I didn’t regret it though, because being a pediatrician is an equally fulfilling career for me to be able to work with children everyday. People always ask me whether I’d choose one over the other, or if I’d ever pursue singing full-time. Sometimes I think it’d be a dream to be able to solely be a singer and only focus on music, because music was my first love, my first passion. But at the same time, I don’t want to completely stop working with children either. Initially it was a struggle to figure out my identity and what I really wanted from either or both. It was discouraging at times to feel like I wasn’t making as many strides in the competitive world of being a singer, because I couldn’t put my 100% into it. But I’ve found a healthy balance for myself and so far it has been working nicely as I continue to put out original music, travel for gigs, and create content for social media when I’m not doctoring.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to shoutout my college A Cappella team, Swaram A Capella, because if it wasn’t for this organization, I would not have even realized that I could sing on the level that I could. Prior to joining that team, I really only sang for fun/in the shower. But being part of that organization made me face my fears of singing on a stage in front of crowds. Eventually it brought me recognition and although I hated when people looked at me or watched me sing, one of my friends at the time who was a DJ, Anish Patel, encouraged me to start posting videos on Youtube and said I had to share my gift with the world. I wouldn’t have pursued singing further if it wasn’t for this and I’m grateful that I listened! Not to mention my parents have always been supportive and have always known the talent was there, so they were happy to see that I was able to balance it alongside med school and during my journey to becoming a pediatrician.
