We had the good fortune of connecting with Doobie DuBose and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Doobie, what do you attribute your success to?
Failure. It is embracing the necessity and enriching life-giving, nutrient rich soil of failure. When I came to the stark realization that the pivotal difference between successful people and those defined by mediocrity, I was able to adjust my rutter and I have never looked back. You see, the pinnacle of success was not climbed but it was built upon failure, after failure after failure. The difference between lasting success and abysmal failure is: successful people fail a lot more than unsuccessful people. That is it. When you view failure as your friend, your mindset, attitude and ultimately your aptitude all begin to soar. Consider planes. Frightening as it is to think about, every time a plane crashes, planes become significantly safer. As a child, when you broke a bone what happened? That break healed stronger than it was before it was fractured. It was the late, great Colonel Sanders, in his ripe old age, who was rejected at restaurant after restaurant (failure after failure) that ensured his ultimate success: KFC. Failure is not an option it is the vital ingredient to success! Look at the old rail-splitter, Abe Lincoln. His life was marred with failure. Because he kept failing again and again, he preserved the Union and save these United States becoming the greatest leader in Presidential history. Show me someone who had gained success and I will show you a person who stands on a mound of failure. To quote the great fictional Rocky Balboa, “It is Not about How Hard You Hit, But It is about How many times You Can get Hit and Keep Moving Forward”. So get out there an fail. Fail often. And most importantly, fail forward!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My career in insurance began in New Zealand after a study abroad. After several years, my family and I moved back to California where I became an insurance agent and manager. A few years back, while at a State Prison in CA (Don’t worry, I was not an inmate), I was selling insurance to Correctional Officers and I completely blew my knee out while tripping over a small wall inside the prisons. This began a long battle with workers comp. After about a year out of work, I decided that I could not sit idle any longer and went back to work, landing a large union with LASD. Soon after, COVID struck. Then the real hardships began. It was in the middle of the worst pandemic the world has seen in 100 years that I decided to start my insurance brokerage. With a wife and seven kids, two dogs and a cat, I was way over my head. But it was sink or swim. Somehow, by the grace of God, we were ablet to battle through the storm and come out on the other side. It was only through the financial challenges, grit, tenacity and perseverance that my wife, our leadership team and I were able to build something unique and lasting. To date, we have two of the largest accounts in the nation and it is due to not wavering from our bedrock fundamentals of integrity and customer-centric values. We ALWAYS do what is best for the client and commission is NEVER a factor. We have helped THOUSANDS of hardworking women and men get customized life, health, accident, cancer and disability insurance, saving them money and providing stellar customer service and care.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Los Angeles. There is such a rich diversity of flavor and culture to experience. We would start on the historic and oldest street in LA — Olvera St. We would get homemade tacos from the 80 year old + family ran taco vendors. After taking in the rich tapestry of colors, smells and trinkets, we would head to Grand Central Market to sample the hundreds of food vendors with their illuminous fluorescent signs and people from all walks of life. Afterward, we would do a little shopping in the downtown famous districts and maybe take a ride on the historic angels flight. For dinner, I am thinking Cole’s original French Dip. Now, I am going to start a French dip war and most people have been led astray that Filipes is the originator of the famous French dip but it was in fact Coles. Coles is not only the oldest restaurant in LA but it is famous for being the set of hundreds of TV shows and movies. Remember Forest Gump when he and Lieutenant Dan are at the bar on New Years? That is Coles! After dinner we would catch the freeway series and watch the Dodgers play the original and true Los Angeles team: The Los Angeles Angels who was the first Los Angles baseball team starting in the late 1800’s, once owned by the Wrigley family and played at Wrigley stadium in LA – look it up!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Zig Ziglar. Jim Rohn. Les Brown. Mary Kay Ash. Brian Tracy. W. Clement Stone. These pillars of Positive Mental Thinking have been my teachers and guides to my road to success – which I might add is a JOURNEY not a destination.
