We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Amy Czyz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Amy, what do you want people to remember about you?
The legacy I’m striving to build isn’t about me, it’s about celebrating people as they are authentically, true to self, and building support, inclusion, and community around elevating each other, helping each other achieve whatever it is we set out to do. I’d want people to remember that going beyond the four walls may be a risk, but working from a place of love and service brings success no matter what. I’d want people to remember me as tiny and mighty, that I embody strength in love, positivity and uplifting people to activate inner power and fulfill the greatest of their intentions.

What should our readers know about your business?
As a local valley eye doctor for over 20 years, entrusted to care for the sight and eye health for more than 50k patients, helping people be more proactive, optimizing health, activating their inner potential, and achieving their goals everyday is just part of my DNA. A few years ago, I found myself taking great care of everyone except for myself, with poor eating and exercise habits. I was too busy and didn’t plan ahead. Healthy meal delivery helped me eat better, but I found water boring, lacking purpose, there was a missed opportunity. I wanted healthy micronutrients that actually help the body throughout the morning, afternoon and evening, drinks that taste and feel like a great experience. Like so many entrepreneurs, when I couldn’t find what I wanted in market, I set out to create. INTENT® drinks give our bodies what we need, when we need it, to keep in sync with our body’s natural rhythm sunrise to sunset. My husband, Tom, and brother Nic Yavelak have been integral in taking this idea and bringing it to life. Of course there are challenges, especially being new in an industry as huge and tough as beverages. Staying true to who we are, and believing that all of our goals are worthy of our best efforts to make them reality constantly drives us to push through challenges and make drinks that are good, and do good for you. INTENT® is smooth, refreshing, light, clean, and tastes really, really good. “Get Up, Stand Up” gives energy and clarity in the morning, “Break Free” helps de-stress, improve focus and endurance through afternoon, and “Night Shift” is for rest, recovery and replenishing for tomorrow. All are certified organic and made with immunity boosting honey, which is so important in these times. Our drinks being available now at Aj’s Fine Foods is a huge step for our small, family business. It’s not easy to bring a new concept like drinks that sync with your natural Circadian rhythm and time of day to market, but as Tom Hanks said in “A League of Their Own,” “It’s the hard that makes it great.” The fact that we all follow the same sunrise and sunset, and have such incredible power to change ourselves and the world around us is the inspiration behind INTENT®. It’s what people do with it that really matters, and creating something that can help people achieve their great intentions makes all the hard well worth it!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A week in Phoenix for fun times with a best friend would be the perfect opportunity to blend the great outdoors, the best bliss indoors, and make food and spirit night caps adventures to remember. It might be a tad lofty, but hiking Camelback Mountain and Piestawa Peak to catch the best valley views, running along the canal to burn some calories, spending a day out on the lake, and getting in a round of golf, all work up a great appetite for food and drink night time adventures. Pomo Pizzeria in both Scottsdale and downtown satisfy that authentic pie and pasta craving, all that action needs some great tasting carbs! If in the mood for a little fancy, and to load up on protein, we’d hit Steak 44 or Dominick’s at the Quarter had have a meal we’d probably walk a mile for, no problem. My friends are pretty low key, and when we get together we gravitate towards sushi. Roka Akor wins for the must have Sunday happy hour and their to-die-for mango habanero well drink for an upscale casual dinner evening, but the best times come from exploring all the city has to offer. I think you’d find us at The Churchill for starters and then moseying on down to Moira’s for reverse happy hour and the Mio sparkling sake, which is worth walking numerous city blocks well heeled, trust me. After all that action, an indulging spa day to cap off the week is more than justified, it’s required for well being. I’ve never met a full body massage I didn’t love, so take your pick from one of the many area resorts Phoenix has to offer, from the tranquility of JW Marriott Revive, enrichment of Hyatt regency’s Spa Avania, or The Sanctuary’s boutique bliss. With so much to experience, a week just isn’t enough, so bestie better just book another trip.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My father lost his dad at age 7, grew up in a small mining town in OH, watched his mom work multiple jobs to keep a roof over their head. Working at a deli to pay for an engineering degree, he then worked in the steel mills and up through management. My father had an idea, designed a patented steel processing line, and built an international company. All from an idea. Just a kid from a single working mom, coming from a poor small rural town, used his mind, hard work, and grit to build a successful company of real value taking scrap steel and converting it to high grade all over the world. I’m sure he had moments, more like years of doubt, but built a team and he persevered. He taught me the value of believing in yourself, no matter where you come from, or how the odds may be stacked against you. I’d like to recognize my dad in gratitude for instilling grit, hard work ethic, and ambition and dedicate this Shoutout to One-n-Ten, a local charitable organization supporting at risk youth and young adults striving to believe in themselves, our community, and that everything is possible.
