We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Ben Leong and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Ben, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started my own business because I want to be in charge of how I take care of people. Healthcare is a relationship, and as a business owner, I can listen to my patients and do what’s best for them, without having any interference from outside voices. I get to create the environment that people learn and grow in, and I am the one that sets the tone for their experience.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love helping people overcome injuries, because I used to be injured all the time. I’ve had almost every major injury a football player can have. Ten surgeries in an 8 year career. I know exactly what it’s like to be in pain and have your season cut short. To work on something for years and have it taken away from you in an instant. To be told that it’s time to hang it up.

I know what it’s like to claw back. I know the cost of small wins and I how they add up. I know what it means to overcome and to prove others wrong. To be an anomaly. To prove to myself that I’m stronger than fear and pain and doubt.

I chose my career because I love to overcome and I love helping others do the same. Every day I work with people who feel just like I did. I see their passion and determination. I watch the layers of pain slowly dissipate. I see them conquer obstacles that used to feel insurmountable.

My treatment style is unique among chiropractors. Some chiropractors try to see 300 people a week. They spend 3 minutes with each patient. Shake their hand “hello,” crack their back, shake their hand “goodbye.”

I treat the way the client wants to be treated. Each person’s pain is unique. Your goals may be radically different from another patient with the same injury. I design my care to address your specific needs. When you only have a hammer, everything looks like a nail. (*remove?) I’ve developed a broad range of tools so that I can accurately diagnose and present honest solutions. I want my patients to move well and heal fast. My typical treatments range from 30-60 minutes. In those sessions, we adjust, massage, stretch, and strengthen. I use dry needling, cupping, stim, exercise—whatever is necessary to tackle your pain, and work you back to achieving your specific goals.

I love winning. My patients are winners. There’s nothing better than seeing someone healed. People can deal with pain for years. Trapped by their bodies, aching, stabbing, throbbing. There’s nothing better than seeing them free from pain. I love my work because I get to be a partner in each person’s victorious journey. Every day I see a new person with a new pain, but I also see what’s on the other side. That same day, I’m seeing someone else experience a breakthrough. I’m seeing someone else overcome. I get to look at the full timeline and see the future. And I get to come alongside to help you take your present pain and put it in the past.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When I travel, I’m really just excited to eat good food and not work. So I’ll focus on the most important thing in life and that is food.

My wife and I lived in New York City before moving to Arizona. I’ve been thoroughly impressed by the food here. It’s just as good as NYC, California, or any other place. We bridge all the West Coast, Midwest and Southern chains and we have tons of authentic talent for every type of cuisine.

My best friend and I would hit:

Burger – Arizona Wilderness (Gilbert)
Pizza – Pizzeria Virtu (Scottsdale)
BBQ – Joe’s BBQ (Gilbert)
Mexican – Cocina Madrigal (Phoenix)
Asian Fusion – Clever Koi (Gilbert)
Fried Chicken – Tipsy Chicken (Mesa)
Ice Cream – Sparky’s Old Town Creamery (Tempe)
Cookie – Tetelestai (Farmer’s Markets)

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When we first moved to Arizona, we did not have family in town. I had no business connections. No major leads. We walked the nearby neighborhoods and handed out fliers, and we worked to connect with other local business owners. My wife met Gabi Mazar at Pilates Tempe, and we hit it off immediately.

Pilates is an awesome tool for building body awareness and developing essential strength. Some trainers are all hype and motivation without any real substance. Gabi and her team do an excellent job of teaching as they train. It’s great to have local trainers that understand the science of what they are doing. When I send people her way, I know they will be getting high quality instruction and attention.

Meeting her was a big part of my success. It’s easy to dream big and put together a plan. It’s harder to actually execute growth. I needed someone from the outside to catch my vision and see the value of my work. Gabi was the first person to hand me a mic. She shared her clients and opened the door for me to do regular workshops at her gym. She gave me the initial traction I needed to kickstart genuine growth. I’m so glad to have her as a partner and friend.
