We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Jessica Brereton Peterkin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Jessica, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process I’ve had in starting this particular business was inspired in part by my desire to have a non-profit organization to meet the needs of the community. FLIGHT™ is a mentorship program derived from my academic consulting services as a subsidy of Ministry of Dentistry, Inc. Aside from providing dentistry services to pregnant women, low income families, and veterans through my non-profit, I also saw the lack of adequate representation in doctorate level healthcare fields and wanted to make a difference. I personally lacked a mentor to provide step by step guidance in pursuit of my career as a dentist. At the young age of 21 I had to figure it out on my own which certainly presented a struggle. In officially launching FLIGHT™, it is my desire to level the playing field while simultaneously alleviating the financial burden it is on minority pre-health students to receive clear and concise advisement during a critical stage of their career journey. I not only want to help my students be a well-rounded applicant, present an attractive personal statement, GPA, & scores but I also want them to nail their interviews, excel in their programs and help them to obtain their dream job in the career they have long sought out.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am Dr. Jessica Brereton Peterkin. A young entrepreneur, dentist, and academic consultant. I have a sincere desire to impact diverse representation in the health professions in this country as I do my part to address the disparity in minority communities. The disparity begins in undergraduate studies as many minority students lack the access to resources that their counterparts have to be equipped, succeed, and excel in their career of choice. I want to bridge that gap and help these students to make their dream a reality. Thus birthed FLIGHT™: FUTURE LEADERS IN GRADUATE HEALTHCARE TRAINING—a mentorship program designed to assist aspiring health professionals in their journey to their doctorate degree. Allopathic Medicine, Dentistry, Optometry, Osteopathic Medicine, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, Veterinary Medicine and more. In 2016, I had the logo designed and continued with mentoring from the most proverbial tutorial platform —YouTube, not yet fully developing my idea until 2020. A light bulb clicked when I took the classes offered by Drs. Warren & Amira Woodruff, fellow dentists who are “More than a Doc”. They equipped me with the tools I needed to develop this idea into more than just videos and actually provide it as a service to better meet the needs of my community. I now have a website and online platform to do just that! Not only this, but I’ve established my non-profit which existence includes dental care, community oral health educating as well as educating and empowering students through careers in medicine. Because it is a non-profit, this means that I can offer services at a discounted rate, reaching more students, making a global impact now and for generations to come. Through the website, students are able to schedule a discovery call with me, a planning session, and 1-on-1 coaching by me, as well as other skilled doctor mentors, as they begin the process through preparing their application, personal statements, letters of recommendation, interviewing, and more. I am also providing online tutoring services in the areas of science & mathematics to further assist students to succeed in their educational pursuit. Thereafter, I can assist with resumés, shadowing placement, & even cover letters revision and support. It really is comprehensive in the services provided and done completely in a safe online community for convenience and easy accessibility. REPRESENTATION MATTERS! So here I am: Representing. Teaching. Equipping. Mentoring. Guiding. Encouraging. Let’s succeed together!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Aside from God, of course, I want to give a shout out to my amazing husband for pushing me to accomplish my dreams and walking with me every step of the way. My parents who gave me life: Mommy who taught me the importance of leadership and community engagement. My close friends and family who speak life into me and lend a listening ear. My amazing Alma Mater, the GREAT Bethune-Cookman University, who taught me to “Enter to Learn” & “Depart to Serve” as I become the change I wish to see. And lastly, Drs. Kimberly Bolden & Laila Hishaw. They have embraced me, guided me, and mentored me as I navigate my career as a young dentist and now business owner. These influential women have gone before me and have helped to empower me, so much so that it is imperative that I pay it forward.
