We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Mark Leonard of The Happiness BreakthroughTM and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Mark, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success is E=MC2 This tried and true formula has helped me be successful without feeling overwhelmed or underperforming. What I have found is that when I am off in one of the areas of the formula than I am off balance. It lays out simply like this. Excellence = Mindset * Care * Connection
Excellence is defined by each of us daily. In fact, I have never woken up and told myself “Ya know, I think today I will be mediocre.” Instead, each day I wake up and ask myself “How can I live excellent today?” Once I define my excellence for the day (or week, month, year, etc) then the real work begins.
Mindset is vital to my everyday success. I intentionally feed my mind with positivity, look for lessons learned, and improving my internal dialogue.
Care is my daily focus on my health. It includes sleep, meditation, exercise, and good nutrition. Each morning I set aside time for daily scripture, prayers, exercise, and planning. This routine creates a healthy approach to ensuring I am focused and ready to take on the challenges.
Connection is the final element. However, I also find this is the most difficult for a lot of people. I strive each day to connect with people and find out how I can serve them. I love asking myself who needs me today and who can I call or connect with better?
Phenomenal success is founded upon simple daily actions that inspire personal motivation.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Many years ago my wife and I were laying in bed. No, this is not a romance story. In fact, this was a bed made for one. I remember watching her lay next to me as I was being prepared for lung surgery to remove my right lung along with the cancer. This was one of the most difficult days in my life. I remember laying there and pleading to God to allow me to keep my lung. I made many promises that day, but one of the big promises was to live a life of service and gratitude. I knew my mission was not complete and I no longer wanted to live in fear.
I was given a second chance that day. The surgeon saved my lung and I am healthy and strong. Today I wake with a renewed energy to help other entrepreneurs, business owners, and people live a life of excellence.
However, I am fueled by using positive psychology and principles of high performance that are founded in academic research and science. I believe that there is a straight forward path that allows each of us achieve our greatest goals in both our professional and personal life.
One of the biggest lessons I learned was from my dad. I remember as a child going camping outside of Aspen Colorado. As we packed up the campsite my dad would ask me to clean up and pick up any trash. In my teenage viewpoint I picked up as little as possible. My dad would review my work and noticed I left a soda can in the firepit. I quickly told him that wasn’t our and it was here before we started camping. His response is one I will never forget, “Son, you always leave it better than you found it.”
That simple phrase has been repeated in everything I do in my life. My desire is to leave the world better than I found it. However, that is often easier said than done. Now I look at each interaction as a chance to leave it better than I found it.
Sometimes leaving the world better is simply smiling, putting down a phone, and truly listening. I owe much of the success in my business to my Dad’s inspiring words. Perhaps that is why I love coaching and speaking so much. My passion is to leave the world better than I found it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the hidden gems here in Arizona. One of my favorite places to eat is the Olive Mill in Queen Creek, AZ. Especially during Canada week or during the Garlic Festival. Their food is amazing and the atmosphere is fun. We would also head over to Jeremiah’s Italian Ice in Queen Creek for some authentic and refreshing Italian Ice.
Another must see activity is hike Devils Bridge in Sedona followed by dinner at Mariposa. Chef Lisa Dahl has created an exquisite restaurant along with views that are to die for.
Then, to wrap up a great local road trip we would watch the sunset from one of the great downtown Phoenix rooftop restaurants.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I give a huge shoutout to my wife Becky who motivates me to be a better man each and every day. For over 31 years I have watched her serve others with a heart filled with love and compassion. She has saved me more times than I can count.
