Meet Ebony Simelton-Payton

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ebony Simelton-Payton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ebony, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My Thought Process Behind Starting My Business
When I first thought about starting my business, it wasn’t just about making money. It was about creating something of my own — something that could bring joy to others while also changing the trajectory of my family’s future.
I knew there were parents out there who wanted to create unforgettable experiences for their children but didn’t always have the time, creativity, or resources to do it themselves. I saw an opportunity to step in and provide something special — luxury sleepover experiences that create core memories families will never forget.
But my thought process went deeper than just a service.
I wanted to build something that my children could see and say, “My mom built that.”
I wanted my family involved. I wanted my mom helping behind the scenes, my kids seeing what hard work and vision look like in real life.
I also knew that my story had power. I’ve been through moments where I didn’t know how things were going to work out. Moments where life tried to break me. But those experiences shaped my mindset: if I can survive those moments, I can build something incredible.
So my thought process became simple:
• Build something meaningful
• Create joy and core memories for families
• Turn creativity into a business
• Build generational impact
• And prove that faith, hard work, and vision can turn an idea into reality
Slumber Happy wasn’t just a business idea.
It was a vision, a healing process, a leap of faith, and a legacy in the making.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career journey didn’t begin with a perfect plan—it began with a vision, faith, and the determination to create something meaningful for my family and my community. I am the founder of Slumber Happy, a luxury sleepover and event experience company based in Arizona that specializes in teepee sleepovers, spa parties, luxe picnics, balloon styling, and milestone celebrations designed to create unforgettable core memories for families.
What sets me apart is that Slumber Happy isn’t just a business—it’s a family legacy in the making. We are a three-generation, family-owned business. My mother helps manage our inventory, laundry, and sanitization process behind the scenes, and my daughter has even helped during setups. Watching three generations come together to build something meaningful has been one of the most rewarding parts of this journey.
What I’m most proud of is that Slumber Happy was built from the ground up through passion, creativity, and resilience. My goal was simple: to help families celebrate life’s moments in a way that feels magical, stress-free, and memorable. Every teepee setup, balloon installation, and party experience we create is designed with intention and heart.
The road to get here was not easy. Like many entrepreneurs, I faced moments where I wasn’t sure how things would work out. I’ve experienced seasons of uncertainty, financial stress, and personal challenges that tested my strength. There were times I didn’t know how I would make it through—but I kept going. Faith, perseverance, and believing in the vision carried me forward. Those challenges shaped the entrepreneur and woman I am today.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that your story matters. Sometimes the very things you’ve overcome become the foundation of your purpose. Slumber Happy represents resilience, creativity, and the belief that joy can be created even after difficult seasons.
Through this business, I’ve learned the importance of community, authenticity, and staying true to your vision even when the journey is uncertain. Entrepreneurship has taught me that success isn’t just measured in revenue or growth—it’s measured in the impact you make on others.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is simple: Slumber Happy is about more than parties—it’s about creating moments that families will remember forever. It’s about celebrating milestones, bringing people together, and showing that dreams built with heart and determination can turn into something truly special.
My hope is that when people see Slumber Happy, they don’t just see a business. They see a story of perseverance, family, and the power of believing in something bigger than yourself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the Phoenix area for a week, I would want them to experience the mix of Arizona’s natural beauty, great food, and fun local culture. There’s so much to do here, and every day could feel completely different.
Day 1 – Welcome to Arizona
I would start with brunch at Snooze, an A.M. Eatery for amazing pancakes and coffee. After brunch we’d walk around Downtown Gilbert Heritage District, which has cute shops, murals, and great places to hang out. In the evening we’d grab dinner at Culinary Dropout and enjoy the outdoor vibe and music.
Day 2 – Arizona Adventure Day
We’d get up early and hike Camelback Mountain for the incredible desert views. After the hike we’d cool down with lunch and margaritas at The Mexicano which has a really fun atmosphere.
Day 3 – Scottsdale Day
We’d spend the day exploring Old Town Scottsdale. There are art galleries, cute boutiques, and rooftop restaurants. Dinner would be at The Mission followed by drinks and music around the area.
Day 4 – Relaxation & Spa Vibes
Arizona is known for beautiful resorts, so we’d spend the day relaxing at Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia for a spa day and pool time with mountain views.
Day 5 – Unique Arizona Experience
We’d take a scenic drive to Sedona to see the famous red rocks. Lunch with a view at Mariposa Latin Inspired Grill is a must. The scenery there feels magical.
Day 6 – Family Fun & Entertainment
Back in the valley, we’d visit Desert Botanical Garden to see the beautiful desert plants and sunsets. Dinner would be at The Henry.
Day 7 – Ending the Trip in Style
For the final day we’d do brunch and shopping at Scottsdale Quarter, then end the evening with a sunset view at Papago Park.
What makes Arizona special to me is the combination of stunning desert landscapes, incredible food, and a vibrant community of creatives and entrepreneurs. Whether you’re hiking mountains in the morning, exploring local restaurants in the afternoon, or watching a desert sunset at night, there’s always something memorable to experience.
