We had the good fortune of connecting with Emilio Jaliel Diaz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emilio Jaliel, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
Being at a PR & Corporate Communications career and depending on your industry it can be a pretty stressful one (ranked as o e of the most stress-rising professions along airliner pilot or fireman) [nervous laugh]

At the beginning of my career I had to juggle University studies while maintaining a scholarship and a PR agency – part time job. While it was the best experience ever it was also a nerve-recking one as my day was full of deadlines and specially the pressure to deliver, no room for mistakes. One could say when young you hace the energy, and you do, but looking back I also realize I was putting all my time into work and normalizing a stressful life.

Later on I transitioned to Corporate Communications at an airline which is my passion and for a while a dream job, where experiences, relationships and learnings accumulated by the tons but as it was fulfilling but the stakes are higher, you work at an industry that is dealing with human lives, a very noble yet super dynamic industry and again your personal work-life balance got impacted but I can say that this was my very first time I started to notice that there were times I was unhappy and even though I had already landed my dream job, it was also at a cost.

Now, imagine if we add to the story another emotional ingredient which is anxiety, and yes; pretty much nowadays everyone deals with it one way or another, but this is key. – Society has normalized this fast-paced non-stop kind of lifestyle, while it can be addictive it also leaves you behind with a feeling of not doing enough and many other emotional and physical triggers starts to appear.

It comes an point in everyones life where you start questioning what are you doing with your life? what’s next? All of a sudden you realize, you are part of this non-stop statistics where you may have the money to do things but not the time, and that does have an impact in your life.
We all have to ask ourselves where is the middle ground, it is so different for everyone, some just want to keep hustling, some we are so demanding with ourselves that we cannot allow ourselves a break or even a mistake, but I believe that everyone and at some level just want to enjoy life.

Think of those horrible bosses we’ve all had, all those corporate junkies for example, work life balance is crucial, because if you want to be a true leader you’ve got to start taking care of yourself having and seeing why work life balance is so important. Because otherwise we turn into those frenetic machines that the only thing that think of is work and that ultimately will take a high toll on you, your team, your health, relationships and your life overall.

Point here is; work life balance should not be an utopia or a privilegie. If as a team leader you want your money making industry to keep going your need yo take this into consideration, we are no longer in the industrial revolution times, we are at a time that we need to see people multi-layerds beings and that mental, physical, emotional health are not nice to haves, are a must to exist and strive.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being immersed in such dynamic and different industries, at the beginning of my career at the PR agency where I had the chance to work with entertainment clients such as Paramount Pictures and UFC to later transition into a personally beloved industry which is the airline world, where traveling, state-of-the-art aircraft combines and fueled my passion and also experiences that one can never imagine, such as crises, network, relationships that make your grow, for example to live a true emergency where people’s live are at stake.

Communications plays a key role, it peoples lives, from the places we work at, our relationships, everything, that is why mastering it, being around this career has shown me and taught me a lot.

I learned that not everything is work, that you need to let go of it at times, it has taught me to be professional, the best in the industry, to stay humble and always keep learning but mostly to stay open and never make any assumptions.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Uhhh! This is a long list baby Welcome to Mexico City’

We’d start with a tour around downtown to see Palacio de Bellas Artes, Zocalo, have a drink at the Best Western hotel with a magnificent view of the square or o e of the best tortas & fresh juices at a little spot called Jugos Canadá (sandwich)Continue to have dinner at Café de Tacuba.

Oh and don’t forget below the ground of all this area there it lays the ruins of the ancient aztec city of Tenochtitlan because when Spaniards came to conquer, they buried the city that was based around a lake, that is why below our feet if we keep digging there are many archeological findings

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To those teachers at uni that believed in me, to those who gave me my first opportunities to f*ck it up and learn in the real world at the PR agency, to the best and most intelligent bosses, to even that one horrible boss I’ve had in the airline industry, that showed me how I do want to keep evolving into and the ways I never want become, as those terrible experiences are also necessary to showcase your own darkness and make you aware of the things you want or not to become part of your life.

And finally to the people, bosses, colleagues at my current job at Atlas Renewable Energy that has been teaching me how things can be different, how people can be considered as a whole and not just producing machines, where you can feel at home while still being at work and most importantly, taking pride in being part of a company that is looking to help reshape our world into a more sustainable one.
