We had the good fortune of connecting with Emmanuel Guarino and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emmanuel, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
When I started it was go go go! I never stopped. I had no sense of when I should be working and when I should be relaxing. As time went on I found out that a lot of successful people were doing something that I was not. They were working hard and playing hard. They did not live in a world where they worked a little then played a little. When it was time to work they worked and when it was time to relax they relaxed. I have found that if you do not segment out times for you to relax or to be working you will end up not feeling like you are able to relax or work. One of the big things I changed from when I started was I started taking time off for vacations. I found that when I was able to do this correctly I was actually able to work much more efficiently and harder when it was time for me to get back to work. I think for any young person or any person who is not where they want to be reading this you need to realize two things: 1. You’ll need to work like crazy to get where you want to be 2. You need to work smarter. You can work hard being a janitor but that is not going to make you a lot of money. It is about working hard and smart. When someone is not where they want to be financially and they hate their job all they want to focus on is not working. Those who have reached the point of financial freedom where they don’t have to work any more will tell you the worst thing in the world is having an empty calendar. Humans were designed to work and bring value to the world. I remember when I had my first taste of that. I was in Europe for two weeks. The first week and a half were amazing! The last few days however I was miserable! I wanted to get back to work. There is a sense of joy that comes with bringing value to the world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have been a real estate agent for about four years and it has had its ups and downs. However more recently over the past two years I have been promoted to sales manager at the Residential Assisted Living Academy. This position has been full of growing experiences. I think for me the biggest challenge has been hiring the right staff. When you first start in a position like this you believe that everyone is the right fit. As you get a little more experience you realized that not everyone is the right fit for everything and you have to let some people go. At first when I would have to let someone know we were moving in a new direction it was tough. However I realized that I was helping these people live a better life. I remember one gentleman specifically. He was an amazing person but he was not the right fit for the position. Firing him at first felt terrible. However I realized that I was not firing him because I hated him. I cared deeply about him and wanted the best for him. Sometimes you have to make a hard call and that is okay. You will live and move on, always remember that.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If someone was visiting me in Gilbert Arizona we would have to do a few things to show them a great time. The first stop would be Gilbert road. This street has some of the best restaurants in Arizona. After that we would have to take a hike on Camelback mountain. Arizona is known for hiking and golf but it is also known for swimming. This is a must for anyone who wants to take a step outside in the hot Arizona sun. After a swim it would be time to play some board games or maybe go to top golf and have some fun. Arizona is full of fun things to do! If you have never been you have to come check it out!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
If I had to shoutout one person it would be my wife. She has always been there for me and she has been my compass. Sometimes I am having a hard day and she will just listen. Having someone who can listen take in the information and give you the right next steps is incredibly valuable. I remember when I was starting out I told her I am not much now but I am going to do everything I can to become somebody. I said if you want to come along for this journey I would love to have you. If you are going to distract me though this might not be the right path for you. We had only been dating a month or so. She looked me dead on and said I am going to be the reason you make it from where you are to where you want to go. I realized I had found the one. She has never stopped amazing me and I thank God for her everyday!
