We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Borman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Being positive is of the upmost importance for success. Not only do people notice your mood or energy, but they pick it up. When teaching my clients I like to give positive and encouraging feedback and to also celebrate the little wins, like conquering a challenging move. In regards to my massage clients, it is important for me to always be kind and positive while they are on the table. It is incredibly vulnerable position to be in, and i want to make sure I am only putting out positive energy for them to take with them. Finally, remaining optimistic is important for you as well. I believe that what you put out in the universe, you will get back, so remaining happy with your success will only bring more of it. Continuing education is a big factor for my work. Growing and learning is important in any career, but adding new skill sets and new modalities keep things interesting for my clients. Work/life balance is important for longevity of your career. It is really easy to get caught up in your business, especially when working for yourself, and forget to take that personal time off to decompress. I find that after I take a vacation, or even just a couple of days off, that I come back refreshed and inspired. Taking time off isn’t selfish, it is actually a win for everyone in the long run.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Lotus Life AZ LLC, is a one woman operation providing a private setting for massage, reformer pilates and yoga. My business is still on the newer side, but it was a long time coming. For a couple of years I balanced working in a spa, traveling to client’s homes and teaching in a studio. I slowly built my private practice and started doing clients out of the house. I put off starting my own business for a long time, mainly out of fear. It is a scary thing to put yourself out there and there is always risk. I like to live my life with no regrets, but my advice to anyone who is considering starting their own business is to just go for it! Working for yourself is incredibly rewarding and I wish I hadn’t let fear control this decision for as long as it did. Now I do all of my private pilates/yoga and massage clients at home and teach group pilates at a studio. It was and still is hard to work, but I love it. My passion for what I do is clear from anyone who meets me, I believe in myself and I believe that what I offer helps people. How lucky am I that I found my passion, I get to do it everyday, and I get to help people? It really is a win/win!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely do a day trip to Sedona! (Technically out of the city, but you can’t miss it!) They have the best hikes and I love walking around the downtown area. I would take them to downtown Gilbert for delicious food options, it is impossible to pick the best restaurant though! For nightlife, we would have to go to Old Town Scottsdale, the bar scene is always fun. One of my favorite places to go is Alamo Drafthouse for movies. They have THE best food and the movie parties/events are so unique, you have to do one at least once. Lastly, I would take them to a couple of different fitness studios for some workouts. There are so many amazing fitness studios in the valley, offering yoga, barre, pilates, cycle, strength training etc. and some of them even offer your first class free!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My personal support system. My parents were key in all of this, providing the financial resources for my education and always cheering me on. My husband is the most supportive partner I could ask for, agreeing to let me work out of our home and always encouraging me to push myself to grow my business. My friends and clients keep me inspired and support me as I continue to grow. I am incredibly lucky to be surrounded and loved by all of them.
