We had the good fortune of connecting with Evelyn Cucchiara and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Evelyn, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve been an entrepreneur for 25 years – and I change businesses when I am no longer excited about a business when I wake up in the morning. So that’s what happened when I created The Toy Tamer. I was the owner of a kids art school, and the predictability and routine were getting old after 20 years.
So I thought about what else I enjoy doing – and organizing has always been a passion of mine. I even wrote a book about it. But when it was time to turnout into a career, I realized that I had no desire to organize adult spaces because I couldn’t guarantee the outcome. Adults are very set in their ways, and don’t like change. The teacher in me wants to make a difference -so I decided to focus on kids spaces only. It unites my love of kids and systems/habits – so it was perfect. Plus, it’s such a micro niche I was, and am, able to stand out completely. There’s no one else who does what I do.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’m The Toy Tamer – I do custom playroom organizing. I put the right structure and system into a playroom so the kids can keep it neat and clean, while learning executive functioning skills at the same time.
That’s why I do what I do – kids today need something to be in charge of in order to teach them how to be functioning adults. But instead we teach them to be dependent upon us for everything, even the cleaning up. And then we’re surprised when they become teens and they can’t do anything! They need the right structure and system now to teach them, that way they can thrive in the future and run their own lives. So we (my husband and I) turn their playroom into a learning lab where they can practice life skills, assuring their success for now and the future.
That’s exactly what Toy Taming does – it creates an exciting playroom right now, but in reality it’s teaching kids executive functioning skills for life. Being a fully functioning person really does begin in the playroom.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live outside of New York City – there’s so much to do here in New Jersey! From beaches to mountains, from small towns to big cities – there’s something for everyone!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My friends and family.
