We had the good fortune of connecting with Frank Fanella and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Frank, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
When one becomes a parent, mistakes are inevitable, but the sheer joy and importance of it should always keep us striving forward. I really believe it must start with a strong religious overtone. It must be clear to the entire family that God comes first. You can build everything off of that. Secondly, a parent must establish a strong and reliable presence. As much as is possible, parents need to be involved and present in the daily lives of their children. Children must be allowed to feel as though they are protected and enabled to flourish. Lastly, parents must pay close attention. Each child is different. Each has different needs. Some are competitive and some aren’t. Some are creative and some aren’t. The important thing is to recognize what allows them to thrive. Keep exposing your children to different pursuits and notice which ones elevate them. The point is to build self-confidence in them and to encourage them. Hold them to high standards and teach them to respect others, The hard work and time spent in good parenting will be forever rewarded with the love, success and happiness of good children.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
About a year ago, my first book was published. As with most nonfiction books, it required a lot of work. I am excted to know, however, that it will be read by many who are outside of my circle. The goal was to find a solution to the problem of evil – why does God allow so much of it? It was a bigger and more complex subject than I had realized. It required a long engagement. Not only am I very proud of the solution I found and the book that explains it, but also of the great persistence and perseverance I was able to depend upon in reaching my goal.

I’ve come to regard this book as my fourth child. It took as long to bring it to maturity as it did my other beautiful children. It, too, can now go out into the world and see what it can make of itself. I will be watching with interest. The story of the book turns out to be a beautiful one. It engages the reader in the depths of individual humanity. Life comes at a very steep price, but it also has unimagined value.

If there were lessons learned in the pursuit of this project, it is to work hard every day in all aspects of your life, inorder to put yourself in a position to follow your passions.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If one of my best freinds were visitng for a week I would start by taking them to dinner at Alcentro Trattoria in Bloomingdale. the food is very good and they have one of the best places around for outdoor dining. If it were during the summer. I would then take them to a baseball game. Wrigley Field is one of the most iconic places around. The fans there are passionate and the surrounding neighborhood is a great adventure. For the rest of the week, we would take a trip out to Galena, Illinois. It’s a scenic place in the northwest corner of the state. The pace is slower, but it is a great place to unwind and relax. Golfing, fishing, hiking, wineries and breweries are all easy to find. If the point is spending quality time with a good friend, then all of the above accomplish that goal.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are many people who deserve credit. It’s very difficult to achieve any success without the active support and leadership of friends and family. The more there are the better. I especially give credit to my immediate family and my children. They have all pursued their own excellence. In that sense we have been on the same page and a good team. We support each other and provide guidant paths as well.

Throughout my life and in my business, I have known so many people. Some are good friends and they provide strong encouragement and a ready acceptance. It is important to have both. But even acquaintances can teach you important things if you are paying attention.
