We had the good fortune of connecting with Gina Holzer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gina, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
One thing many people don’t realize about the consumers goods industry is how many steps, processes, and components it takes to create just one product. When you purchase a product, you’re most likely thinking about how nice it looks or what the product can do for you. What most people don’t know is that that product you’re thinking of purchasing or see in store went through numerous processes and is made of multiple pieces just to get there. Take my industry for example – vitamins and supplements. To create our product (we create collagen based supplement powders that enhance hair, skin, nails, and health) it starts with finding the right ingredients, container, lid, seal that goes under the lid, scoop that goes inside the product, and outside packaging. Beyond that it gets more complex such as selecting the container color and size, container material, container neck finish, lid color and style, scoop length and color, scoop shape, selecting a seal that goes under the lid with the right functionality and easability, designing the label, making sure the label is in compliance with FDA regulations, label paper thickness and finish style, style and size of the protectant seal that goes on the outside of the packaging, box design and production, and so on. When you understand the amount of complexity and work it takes to produce one product, you begin to appreciate all the products you see and purchase. Making products isn’t easy and takes a lot of time and investment – not to mention the cost to ship the product to customers is quite pricey.
What should our readers know about your business?
Wholy Dose is a supplement company based in Southern California. We create clean, premium collagen-based supplements that enhance overall beauty and wellness. What makes us different from other collagen brands is that we focus on quality and efficacy. We take time to find ingredients that offer the best quality, taste, solubility, and benefits. We use clinically-proven ingredients that deliver the most powerful results for your skin, hair, nails, and overall health, which is our signature wholy grail blend of collagen, hyaluronic acid, and biotin to provide you with a whole dose. We have many customers tell us they tried other products but nothing worked to improve skin and hair until they used Wholy Dose. Take a look at our before and after results https://wholydose.com/
What are you most proud of of your business?
I’m most proud of seeing our customers’ results and getting into Nordstrom. We have many customers who’ve gotten amazing results from using Wholy Dose, where they were not able to get from using other supplements. For example, we have a customer who had cancer and wasn’t able to grow her hair back for over 7 years until she started using Wholy Dose. Being a small startup, it was a proud moment when we got into Nordstrom. They vet their brands tremendously based on packaging, quality, and company values, so for us to get approved in Nordstrom was surreal, especially seeing Wholy Dose product in the actual stores! We value all of our retailers and it’s constantly a proud moment to see Wholy Dose sold in retailers across the world, including small businesses, local shops, and stores in other countries.
How did you get to where you are today business-wise?
I personally struggled with finding a product to help with my beauty and health concerns (strengthen hair, help with hair loss, harden nails, minimize pores, smoothen skin texture, and strengthen my immune system). So, over a span of 10 years I tried many different products to address these concerns but nothing I tried delivered the results they promised. I then learned about the science behind supplements and began researching ingredient efficacy and created my own supplement blends at home based on this research. I then tested them on myself and didn’t stop until I discovered a mix of ingredients that finally gave me the results I spent 10 years looking for, which was a mix of collagen, biotin, and silica. Once I experienced the results for myself, I decided to start Wholy Dose to help others get the results they deserve and that they can feel good about.
Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?
Manufacturing is the most important component in starting a supplement company and I didn’t have prior experience, so it was difficult. I overcame the challenges by learning as I went along and had to educate myself on the ins and outs of the industry. There’s a lot to know about the supplement industry and producing a supplement, so it was mostly trial and error paired with finding the right manufacturer and supplier partners to work with. Besides manufacturing, there’s a whole other side to the business that includes sales, marketing, operations, fulfillment, finance, photography, customer service, and so on.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Southern California has so much beauty – beaches, mountains, desert – I’d take them hiking in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, Griffith Observatory, and Joshua Tree, as well as enjoy the beaches in Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach, Malibu, Dana Point, and Santa Monica. Some favorite food spots are Urth Cafe, Banzai Bowl, Original Fish Co., Splashes Restaurant (ocean front dining), True Food Kitchen, Ola Mexican Kitchen, and a sushi spot (there are so many good places to chose from!).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m grateful for my parents who sacrificed everything to leave Vietnam during the Vietnam War to create a better life for my brother and I. They left during the war and came to America to start a new life that valued freedom. Because of that, they have shown me endless support for all my endeavors and I am forever grateful for that.
