We had the good fortune of connecting with Iz Wyrd and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Iz, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe risk-taking is an essential part of the soul’s journey. Risk taking has gifted me many opportunities to evolve in ways I never expected! If we never take a chance we’ll never know or grow. Risk disrupts stagnation, shakes up complacency & has been an electrical current throughout my life & work as a creator & facilitator, especially over the last 10+ yrs. I’ve taken all kinds of risks with my body, my wyrds & lifestyle habits. Being willing to take risks has inspired me to question authority, face inner fears, unravel outdated programs & challenge the status quo. I love the work of the Sacred Rebel!
To have compassion & gain wisdom from the risks we take, for better or worse, is crucial. Over time I’ve evolved from a bit of a reckless risk taker to more of a thoughtful risk taker. In the heart of the lockdown & uncertainty of 2020, I gave birth to healthy, vibrant star seed twin babies in my home, without any medical intervention. I knew in my heart it was the right choice for me. Conventional Allopathic Care treats birth, especially with twins, as a pathology or illness. But the thing is I wasn’t sick! I’m actually very healthy & conscious. Birth is without a doubt, a natural rite of passage that has been hijacked by the patriarchal forces of control. It’s so sad. I had already birthed my first son at home & was initiated into the Ancient Feminine Wisdom from that experience. So with an exquisite protocol of nourishing techniques, healing practices & the support of midwifery counsel during my twin pregnancy, I went inward for the answers of what to do; & home birth was 100% the way for us.
The mainstream narrative often does not match my personal inner truth & knowing, so there was an element of risk in making that sovereign choice to resist the naysayers. There are a lot of folx living in fear with relation to their own health & who aren’t clear on who is controlling the information & knowledge of their health. Following my instincts was a huge affirmation in trusting my body’s (& babies) innate intelligence to successfully navigate this season of my life. It was wildly empowering to defy the status quo & demonstrate a simple but most profound act of resistance to the norm whilst fortifying & honoring ancestral practices. Risk is often intuitive & I intuitively knew to approach my twin pregnancy, labor & birth in my own unique way (the way women have always birthed babies prior to the boon of patriarchal intervention). So I made a calculated risk to forego conventional care based on many factors. For the record, my twin home birth was beautiful, safe & full of love! Taking these types of thoughtful risks, & assuming the responsibility of those risks, has dramatically altered my perspective of power & enhanced the way I show up & hold space for myself & my community as a mother, wife, artist, healer, educator in the field of holistic wellness practices & advocate for authenticity, sovereignty & body autonomy.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Mysticism & the realm of Spirit have always been a deep inspiration for my creative works. Since a young one, the great mysteries & unexplainable phenomena of the world & her creatures have drawn me in like a magnet. I enjoy taking complex ideas & feelings & then translate them into simple signature Iz-Wyrd style images with vibrant colors & bold symbology. When I create custom art for others it becomes medicine. It’s such a great humbling honor to be a channel for that Divine Alchemical Transmission. My intentions are always to create from an esoteric space… to bring a sense of wonder, curiosity & healing into everything I make. It’s a form of “wombafesting” the Spiritual Wisdoms into the Physical plane.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?Nature! I always take my visiting friends out to the Salt River, for a dip in Oak Creek or one of the many beautiful trails in Sedona. The Desert Botanical Gardens, Arcosanti & Superstition Mtns are all so beautiful. Our current times are definitely strange & I’m more of a homebody & don’t really go out to restaurants too often (I have 7 month old twin & a 5yr old so ya know…it’s a lot haha). But I love all the local Farmer’s Markets. Typically I’d invite friends to yoga, medicine ceremonies, ecstatic dance, sound healings, live music & art shows. The valley is full of sweet lil gems…just gotta hit the streets to find out!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are SO MANY beloved souls I’d love to shout but for now I’d like to acknowledge my children: Ensō, Alkhemia & Zavier for giving me purpose, teaching me patience & showing me presence; my devoted loving, hard working husband Chippewa, my Goddess Birthing Coven, the Tattoo Gods & Goddesses for blessing our family, the sacred plant medicines & sentient mycelium network, my teachers, students, supporters & extended healing community! Infinite Gratitude to Pachamama, our wise ancestors & all the Mothers past, present & future! Blessings on Blessings!
