We had the good fortune of connecting with Jahara Jayde and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jahara, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I chose to pursue career that made me feel fulfilled and like I was making a difference in the lives of the people around me. When I realized that what I’d begun was moving in that direction, I decided it was worth taking seriously.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I do a lot of different content, but I am primarily a cosplay artist! For those who are unfamiliar, that means I recreate and dress up in the costumes of fictional characters; either from movies, tv, anime, video games, and even books! Cosplay has been an art form for a long time and a hobby for many, so I’m proud to have made a solid career out of it. I think what helps me stand out, and subsequently has been key to my success is that for a long time there was a mentality in the cosplay community that you needed to look like a character, skintone etc., but I have made it a point to not conform to those limitations, and instead shown that all you need to cosplay is a love for that character and some creativity. In doing so very publicly, I helped encourage others by bringing more black representation to the space.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To be honest, I absolutely love food, so the first places I think of are all restaurants! I also happen to be vegan, so everywhere we would go has options for that! My favorite, two restaurants are Wraps and Curry, an amazing Indian place, and Little Saigon, a family owned Vietnamese place. So I would definitely have to take them there. My immediate next thought is dessert, so I would want to take them to my favorite bakery, which is called Nami. Everything there is fully vegan, and they have a lot of gluten-free options. My next thought is shopping. For that we need a lot of options. I make sure I take them to Tanger, Westgate, Scottsdale, fashion, Square, and downtown Glendale for some vintage shopping!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have a great many people to thank for where I am. However I’d like to take the time to thank my husband. He encouraged me from day one, and never questioned my decision to pursue an unorthodox career. He was telling me from the get go that I have what it takes to be successful, and jumped right into supporting me in any way he could. Both actively and mentally. I firmly believe that having him in my corner, taking what I was trying to do so seriously, and always urging me to take it a step farther, is one of the main reasons I’m able to thrive today.
