We had the good fortune of connecting with Janelle Joy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janelle, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Client Focused. It’s a phrase that we hear a lot in the small business community, however that’s for a very good reason. Client focused, or client first, has been why Janelle Joy is so successful. We value and put a lot of our love, hard work, and sweat into each of our photographers we edit for. Our 1-on-1 relationship with them is more than just editing their images, it’s cheering them on, and showing up for them in both good and bad times. We take our relationship and trust they have in us seriously and don’t take it lightly.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve personally been a photographer for over 15 years and back in 2016 I saw this huge need in our industry for a more personal approach to outsourcing your photo editing. I knew that I could bridge this gap and help so many photographers free up valuable time to spend on other important areas of their business and personal life. I know that freeing up this time would allow them to create better client experiences, increase their income, and still have a personal life in the process. Plus so much more! I think what makes Janelle Joy stand out is not only our combined skills of 40+ years as photographers and editors, but also our passion behind what we do. What started as a one women show back in 2016, quickly grew to a team of 7, 1-on-1 private photo editors in a 1.5 year time from opening the doors. Yep, you heard that right! 1.5 years! This was because of the huge success and high demand that allowed me to bring in 7 private photo editors. Collectively, we serve 80+ wedding photographers all over the world and we owe our success and growth to our outstanding clients. We each get so excited when a wedding comes in from our photographers. Seeing all the creativity, hard work, and love each of our photographers have for their couples never ever gets old. It’s truly the dreamiest job editing all these weddings. I’m personally a sucker for all the details! Oh and the first look….and the groom’s reaction to seeing his bride walk down the aisle..ummm, I guess it’s hard to pick what is really my favorite. I just love it all and each of my Janelle Joy editors feel the same. Another thing that helps Janelle Joy standout would be the education I provide to other photographers. I (Janelle) speak at conferences all over the nation on all things editing and outsourcing, and even team building. I’m so passionate about photographers learning how to set their business up to be able to outsource their editing successfully. (Because sadly enough, there are some bad experiences out there and that breaks my heart!) This can be teaching them how to define their editing style further and creating their signature editing look, consistency in their editing, establishing solid editing workflows, or even how to break down their editing so that their editor will know exactly what they want and edit their images just like they would. Due to the high demand of questions and needs, I have started offering 1-on-1 mentoring sessions that are custom designed around the photographers editing needs. This can be creating a custom preset, tweaking their editing style to get them to where they want to be, or even getting them on a good editing workflow that saves time and gives them consistency. It’s really whatever they want to work on, I’m there for them and offer them a professional eye and years of experience that sets them up for success.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I have one word for you… FOOD. We have some of the BEST food and some of my favorite places are, Sofritas in Fountain hill. I love their fish tacos, and bruschette boards. Another few yummy places would be Boca Taqueria, Green Corner, and any of the soda and cookie places. I know soda and cookies sound weird, but it’s my go to for a fun treat after a long day or week. You should definitely give it a try!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To be totally honest, it’s all of our Janelle Joy clients that deserve a shout out! There have been countless times when I see them singing our praises on social media, networking events, and with other biz besties. Without our amazing clients, Janelle Joy wouldn’t be where it is today. In addition to our amazing clients, I have made some incredible friends in the creative industry. They have been my support, mentors, and friends that encourage me to keep moving forward and chasing my dream. Of course I couldn’t do what I do and Janelle Joy wouldn’t be what it is without my team of talented editors who tirelessly work to take care of each of their photographers. I was lucky enough to pick from a large pool of applicants, so when I say I have the best of the best, I’m not kidding! I often pinch myself to make sure it’s not a dream when I think about what a great team I have.
